Gene, you're an inspiration.

Question - where do you get your steel?

I get it from a local company, Wright Steel, or from a guy in town that builds drag cars. He gets it form the same place but at a better price since he buys more at a time.

Here are the latest pics. I am getting ready to mount the seat, pedals and steering wheel. I still need to get a fuel cell.

G-you are the maddest merkurer I think I will ever come across!!!
unreal workmanship-you have just inspired me to bring my track car from hiding and tear it apart and just change everything that doesnt belong on a track car-I still have about 5g to complete the street car project and then old red is gonna get it! doing it right, like yourself!

Guess whats missing from this pic, other than the rest of the car.

Why you need a roll cage, or look how thin the metal is in the A pillar.

Yep, carbon fiber roof. The steel roof weighs 38lbs., the carbon roof will be around 6 lbs.
The only original XR body parts will be the A pillar/windshield support.

The last parts to be made are CF hatch, tailight panel, and cowl vent.

It looks like the car will come in under 2000 lbs. when it's finished, If I go with the 2.3 Duratec maybe only 1800 lbs.

Can you say... "Go-kart"

Of course the other cool thing about shaving another ~30 lbs is that you're shaving it from the highest point on the car. :headbang

On the Brat project, I'm going to be filling my A pillars with Terocore after stuffing some 1/4" rod down them, fed in from the top of the B pillar where the roof was cut off. B pillars will be filled in a similar manner. This is what Ford uses on the Explorer to strengthen the pillars, but an external agency found that using reinforcing rod along with the Terocore reduced crush deformation distance by 466% (equivalent impacts). Think of this stuff like "concrete for cars" but without the weight.

As usal, the golden rule applies... strong, lightweight, inexpensive - pick any TWO!
