Yes, those are production by year, so those are technically 85s. Just like none were actually built in '89.
3" mandrel bent exhaust, Ported/Polished head, 1.89/1.57 valves, Gutted uppper/Knife edge lower intake, T3/T4, LA3, Big VAM, Cold air intake, 40bob header, Gillis valve, Forge BOV, Mustang SVO T5, Conquest intercooler, 20psi.

Now if I could just find out when the "last" XR4Ti was built. 12/88 build date on the door tag we know that for sure...maybe I'll try that email listed above...

Is there any info in the VIN that tells the exact build date?

I meant exact date. :) I have 2/88 on mine, but wanted to know which day it was built. Then I'd know when to get the cake, and plan the party.... you understand.

On the driver's side shock tower, the car's build date has been stamped. Mine is 6-4-85, which falls on Carlisle weekend and also happens to make it exactly one month older than my son. 8)

John - every few years the production number issue surfaces. There is some debate over which are the correct numbers. The numbers published in Graham Robson's excellent book 'The Sporting Fords - Sierras' are somewhat different:

1985 12,400
1986 13,559
1987 7,352
1988 6,283 XR4Ti + 16,093 Scorpio
1989 2,870 XR4Ti + 5,917 Scorpio

Total: 42,464 XR4Ti, 22,010 Scorpio

I believe these to be the numbers sold, but there is a difference between Karin's numbers and these numbers of 2,904. That is a large disparity. Maybe someone is going to discover a warehouse in New Orleans or Baltimore with 2,904 XR4Ti at some time??

The numbers with major model year changes are covered in the Quickfacts section of the MCA 'Merkur Story'.

Boostfiend - like JB says the driver's side strut towe in yellow ink yours will have a 2 (since you said 2/88 on the door) and the following # will be the day.

Specktor - your 88's have a 9/88 tag on the door??? 9/88 build would certainly be an 89 model I would think :?:

Also, the difference of 2,904 cars between the 2 sources quoting the production #'s is a bit crazy.

9/88.... September.
Most of the civilised democracies in the world gets at least 4 weeks of garanteed vacation after the first year on the job thanks to the strong unions and the high per centage of workers who are unionized.
Most of the civilised democracies have decided that JULY is vacation month.

In large factories that is invariably when repairs and refit and re jigs take place, those staying on getting big fat bonuses.
I have been in those refit crews when a I was a lather operator way back when.

As such, anything 1 August is usually going to be the next model, even if it might get titled or registered as something else depending on how fare and how fast it is transported and sold.

In July 1979, I stopped by the Husqvarna factory and picked up a new 1980 model sometime around the 15th or 16th.

As for the disagreement as to numbers, I would thing the people who actually made the things might have a better idea of what they made.
They are GERMANS after all, not English.

(What ever you do, don't mention the WAR!!)

All of John's numbers were Metric. After much math, there's still only 2 unaccounted for Merkurs. These had a special badge that read "MERKER" thus making everyone we run into say the name wrong.
