Well, not too long ago I had this thought....

"Is the Merkur XR4Ti FWD?"

Then I found a few places for info (including here) and saw they were RWD... then I saw they were IRS, and powered by the bullet-proof 2.3l Ford and turbocharged.

Next thing I remember is selling my 66 Volkswagen Beetle and searching for an XR4Ti. "I HAVE TO HAVE ONE!" - kept going thru my little brain.

It's all kind of a blur after that. A few grand later, I now drive my 88 nearly every day. I can't think of a car within this price range that even comes close to what these little cars can do. Hell, I can't think of a car twice the price range that can touch it on all fronts.

It's a neat car. Glad I bought one.

Didn't the Cossie Escorts have the same running gear when they switched over for Rally? I could have sworn I remember hearing that.

Granted, the Escort in the UK and the Escort in the US are apples and oranges. Kinda like the Festiva. The UK get's that cool looking (albeit fwd) Festiva, and we got the Yugo looking rust bucket.

Fer fawks sake its about 2.2"
Wheelbase Sierra 102.7"
Wheelbase Escort Cosworth 100.5"

Its Sierra up to the level of the bottom of the windows and MkV fwd Escort glass, roof, hatch, lights.
And then some extra bits welded here and there.

But other than barrowing some tin and glass, shared nothing with any fwd so called Escort aside from the hub diameter and bolt pattern being 4.25".
After the mkIII in 1980 they were all east-west fwd junk.
Escort Cos really was a chopped floor for a Sierra

I think someone should start a car cult around the Ford Perspire-- now there's a stimulating automobile worthy of the fine heritage of the Blue Oval...

Too bad we didn't get the Ka. Front drivers are OK as long as they're small--subcompact small. Hell, ever drive or ride in the original Mini (or the new one, for all I know)? A total blast! The Suzuki Swift GT, a tarted-up Fiesta, VW GTi, or name-your-hot-hatch; they can be loads of cheap thrills when properly set up. But once they get to be Sierra-sized, they need to be RWD, IMO.

Another one of my batant prejudices concerns four-door sedans: give a car four doors, or something above the mid-size, and it should be fitted with a decent power plant and an automatic transmission. I feel silly shifting a four-door sedan. Modern transmissions are excellent; the mission of the four-door sedan (or saloon, if you prefer, since implicit in that moniker is the true purpose of the car) is to transport people from hither to yon-- in reasonable comfort, and with speed and competence by all means-- but it's not a sports car, or even a coupe with sporting predilections. If it were meant to be competitive, it would have two doors-- or none. Nothing wrong with hauling ass to the airport, but there should be plenty of room for the luggage, and Mom shouldn't bang her head on the back window when you hit that steep driveway a lttle too hard. Seeing a large(r) four-door sedan with a manual gearbox is like seeing a Miata with an automatic; it's just wrong.

The Sierra/XR4Ti is in that size category where either stick or manual is appropriate. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: show me another car that is so good at so many things. Compromise rarely works in automotive design, but the XR4 is a stunning exception.
