anyone tried some small radial slicks? at the strip?

Post by turboplz »

I'm thinking about buying a couple extra stock 14" and putting some FWD Drag radials on them and see if they're worth it. Only thing is I just don't know if it will hook enough (205/50/14, B/F goodrich t/a) to do much or hook too much and break the pumpkin, lol.

I wouldn't be dumping from high rpms, probably something like 2500-3k and more of an ease out on the clutch. Just really want something that will grab and not spin at all in second gear.

Your question made me recall my Dad's first pass in his Nova. He was using worn out slicks to test the launch and decided to go for a half track burst. At the end of the track when he let off, he could feel the ass wanting to fishtail. Scary for sure.

Regardless, do you run a Posi? Also, what's the diameter of the slicks? 205/50/14 would be around ... what, 20 inches? That's TINY! You'll be headed thru the traps at 7500 R's... in fifth! :)

I know slicks work! ...but never used them on my street cars. Axle's, trannys, and diffs get spendy!

you do not want to put sticky tires on a stock diff, trust me :)
besides the fact that its pegleg, it might as well be made of glass.

to be honest, i'm not 100% sure if it's a pegleg or not. I can lay two wheel burnouts all day long, not sure if that's just the stock gear grabbing well or not :?

anyway, i was just thinking, as it stands right now i don't get traction till third if i'm on it from the get-go. perhaps i'll go with some bf g-sports or pole positions.

if you havent changed it then its the stock one tire fryer. your traction issues have alot more to do with suspension geometry than tire compound. after 20 years the springs have sagged which has introduced a large amount of negative camber into the rear suspension. this makes for a contact patch about 2" wide on the ground. fix the camber and youll notice a huge increase in traction, i know i did.

I ran 26X8 hoosiers for a summer at the track with no problems i had them on mustang 10 holes rims. I know maxboosteric on turboford ran the same size slicks also.
