Here's a link to the Montville Zoning Board of Adjustment minutes - sure looks like they're still trying to push the Lowe's approval through, but nothing happening too quickly. It's been months since I've been there - they may have six Merkurs for all I know - probably not....

It's all over. Stopped by GI's on the way home from a meeting today, and while they're still sorta open, they no longer allow anyone into the yard. Looks like they've already cleared half the property for Lowe's.

Not many businesses survive for 65 years - this one did.

They may very have been entirely closed when the flood waters were highest for a couple days, but apparently they've been closed to retail customers for about a month now. They're clearly winding down operations overall.

Updated: Lowe's Scraps Rt. 46 Plan

Proponents of the home improvement store said it would have created jobs, brought in tax revenue and cleaned up a junkyard.

A plan by Lowe's to build a 137,000-square-foot home improvement store plus a garden center on the site of a junkyard on westbound Route 46 in Montville has been scrapped, the company said.

A planner for Lowe's e-mailed the town last month saying the company was backing off its plan to build, Mayor Jim Sandham said.

Sandham said the e-mail from Lowe's didn't give a clear reason for the change of course. He said Montville officials would be seeing if anything can be done to save the project.

A spokeswoman for Lowe's on Friday said the project is off.

"Lowe’s has decided not to move forward with store development in this town," Stacey C. Lentz said Friday.

Rene Avila, the owner of the property at Route 46 and Old Bloomfield Avenue, the site of G.I. Auto Salvage Co., said he still plans to clean up and bring tenants to the property.

On Monday, Lowe's reported that its results for the quarter fell short of expectations and announced the closing of seven stores.

Montville residents raised concerns about traffic stemming from the project and Lowe's was adjusting its plans in June. Proponents of the plan said it would have created jobs, brought in tax revenue and cleaned up a junkyard in town.

Slow day today, so I decided to start my one-man campaign to bring back the junkyard.

Salvage Yard Filled With Sandy-Damaged Cars

Township officials said business owner is legally able to continue junkyard operation on site.

But according to Meghan Hunscher, the township's principal planner, a big-box retail store may not necessarily move in to the property and technically, another junkyard operation could lease the land  :sawzall

There was a lot of populated property under-water that day - the number I've seen from a couple sources is 230,000 cars totaled. Apparently they're all going to Ohio - wonder if that's why Anglin got out of there?

Yeah, he's right - you always have to smell the carpet before jumping in on what seems like a good deal. :p

It's been a year or so since I did a search on this topic - here's the approved license for GI's to continue as a junkyard in 2013 (probably primarily for the Sandy-flooded cars). Don't know if it's been renewed for 2014.

With 2018 upon us, I was wondering what was up with the GI property. Well, it looks like they were back to trying to get a housing project approved, but this time NON age-restricted. The variance was denied by the zoning board....

https://www.tapinto.net/towns/montville ... r-pine-bro

MONTVILLE, NJ – The Montville Township Zoning Board of Adjustments voted unanimously to reject an application by Avalon Bay LLC to receive a variance to build 349 non age-restricted rental units in Pine Brook on what is commonly referred to as the GI Auto Salvage Yard.

Also interesting to note is that GI's annual license to operate a junkyard was renewed on Feb 21, 2017. This, despite the fact that they haven't really operated as a junkyard since 2010.
