soon to be startting 2.5L Folvo T5 AWD project

Post by pyropete125 » Thu Feb 26, 2009 6:08 pm

just like the title says. i am going to start a awd project for my 'first' xr which is a 89 and mostly gutted already and the firewall is cut out and setback 4" currently.

so now here's what i have planned:

volvo headed 2.5L [prob starting with a 2.3...]

T5 with a korean application tailshaft to mount GM astro transfer case astro front diff w/ 3.73
8.8 rear with 3.73
cobra front and rear disks and 5 lug
astro inner- ranger outer-custom middle front axles
custom front and rear driveshafts
"double hump" front oil pan with crossover tube
euro sapphire front crossmember, TCA's, hubs, swaybar, and struts
modded fiero manual rack
MS2 ecu and holset hx40 turbo

my second xr has a folvo 2.3 holset hy35, T5, but i am having some MS2 issues. with a good weekend i am hoping it will run, but the weather has been crappy here to finish it up. when i get it running i am going to probably sell it to finish up the financing of the awd xr.

I will be taking many many pics of everything that i do with my awd project. i have been emailing back and forth with tim roman and hes been great help. i have pretty much aquired most of the parts for the awd project already so it should go hopefully smooth.

If you're going through all this work, I would strongly recommend using a Corvette T-56 like Tim did. With a lot of power and no wheelspin to save the day, your gearbox is going to see lots of peak torque. AWD cars are always known to destroy gearboxes, so while you're in the planning phase, I would plan ahead there...

I agree with Chris. The weakest T56 you can get (from the '93 Camaro/Firebird) still has a much higher torque rating than the strongest factory T5.

On a side note, the Corvette T56 is NOT the one that I would use, and I'm sure that Tim didn't either. It is rear mounted, with a different case that mates to a transaxle:

If you're going to use a T56, I would recommend one from a '98+ Camaro/Firebird. '93-'97 were mated to the LT1, rather than the LS1, and had a pull style clutch. The LS1s, which came out in '98 were all normal push style. The Viper T56 will line the shifter up in our XR the best, and it is also the strongest, although I don't see anybody here needing that extra strength, as we don't have 3500lb cars that put out gobs of off idle torque with drag slicks. The advantages of the Viper T56 are not worth the added cost, unless you can get a deal on one.

Pete,
I would love to see some pictures of what the setback firewall looks like. Maybe get a description of what was needed to do it, too.
Thanks,
David

theres some crappy pics in my sig link in the 89 xr folder

i cut the firewall where i wanted to, tacked it in 4" back and made side pieces and welded them in. the corner of the framerails are the only hard part to figure out. i added seom bracing and welded them up also.

Luke - you use the Corvette T56 since it has a rear flange and output shaft that makes it easier to fab up a transfer case adapter. Since the Corvette has a T56 that bolts up to a differential already, things are just simpler in general.

no im definatly going with the T5 this time.

my ultimate goal is to sell all my xr 2.3T stuff and do a RCR GT40 kit car. we'll see though, thats a few years down the line.

I'm honing my fab skills now with all this and i like to do unconventional things :) though an xrbratty is is too unconventional even for me :)
