Re: Just got a '86 Merkur
Car looks awesome. I hope to keep watching the build.
May be a bit late, but I'd stay away from stock valve springs. They are pretty soft for a autox/revy motor.
Can you send me a pic of the tire size and make he was using? Looks like GoodYear something or other. Are they cantilever slicks?

Re: Just got a '86 Merkur
I think Anglin started autocrossing XRs in '98 at the Carlisle autocross. I started autocrossing XRs in '00 or '01. Roland Zuk was running an ESP XR4Ti at National events before all of us. I'm not sure how well he did, and I'm not sure we'll ever find out without some paperwork currently residing in Topeka.DSPXR4ti wrote:Was that before all of us Ray, Chris, Ben, very cool to see.
EDIT: Actually, it looks like Roland finished 29th out of 32 cars in ESP at the 1998 SCCA National Championships:

Well thank you Roland because the XR4ti was original Classed in ESP and then reclassed to DSP.Grayson wrote:I think Anglin started autocrossing XRs in '98 at the Carlisle autocross. You'll love the Rival S. At the last nationals, all podium winners were on B-stone RE71 or on a mix of Rival S and RE71. Wish they made em in the sizes i needed. Im stuck with Dunlop ZII Star Specs for now.
Re: Just got a '86 Merkur
Wow it's been over 2 years since my last post in this thread!
I changed out the V belts for a serpentine setup and cleaned up the wiring some more, getting ready for the rotated intake, turned out pretty nice and it solved a weird problem I was having... the car wouldn't turn off when it was cold! once I had the ignition off I could turn on the headlights then the engine would shut off, my friends would just laugh. Apparently the alternator was causing the issue because I'm now using a ranger alternator and it shuts off fine now.

Your front plate is a little bent. In some towns here, that might be an issue.
