Back on the road build.
I'M BACK!
Life without an XR didn't last for long. I have a new beast.
Got it yesterday.
It's been messed with so I have to undo a few things to get it through SMOG.
Arriving home. Exactly the same as my last one. lol.
A short video.

Congrats once again Nate. Is this the one on CL? Camp Pendleton or Vista area?

Re: Back on the road build.
No the Camp Pendleton one got sold.
The Vista guy is taking the engine out of that one but put his back out so has been delayed.
This one I heard about through Chip at the Frisco's meeting the other weekend.
It was in Riverside from a guy who has, I think 2 SVO's and a supercharged Foxbody Notch V8 that is really nice.

Ah, this is good to see!
Keeping the Lima, or are you determined to see a V8 Redux?

Re: Back on the road build.
2.3 for now.
SMOG & tags are the first goal.
As far as I can tell so far this engine seems pretty healthy so I may turn it up a bit and head to a track.

Re: Back on the road build.
This hose had popped off. I assume that's why the turbo wasn't working.
I pushed it back on, it makes 10psi now. Better than before!
Started to make the intake more SMOG friendly.
And lastly the grille I just got from My Dad in England. It's chopped in the middle. I have to fix it.

Re: Back on the road build.
Nate, an intercooler is smog legal as long as the car is factory turbocharged. You just cAnt run a BOV.
I guess you now need the stock accordian hose for the vam to turbo

Re: Back on the road build.
I'm borrowing a stock XR ECU & VAM off Darren Cole today so I'll see what else I need after I pick up those bits.
The cold side on this turbo is bigger so I don't think the standard VAM to turbo pipe will work.

Re: Back on the road build.
Don't know how much bigger, but there's no problem stretching it to fit over the large VAM (3") vs. the smaller one (2.5"). If you warm it up it helps. Also, if that's an '88, you could say it's from a TC, as engine swaps are OK as long as it's the same year or newer (IIRC), and obviously those cars came with an IC. Also, I believe Rapido's IC is CARB-Approved-- just tell them it's one of those!nathankershaw wrote:I'm borrowing a stock XR ECU & VAM off Darren Cole today so I'll see what else I need after I pick up those bits.

Re: Back on the road build.
Back to stock for now.
I put the big VAM in an XR air box that I got from a friend and re-pinned the loom back to stock and put in an XR ECU and the car drives and runs so much better.
Just need a cam belt cover for timing and an electric boost control solenoid the I think we're ready for SMOG.

Re: Back on the road build.
Hmm.. my car did not run well with a big VAM and PF ECU at all... popped on acceleration, did a bunch of other weird stuff. Runs much better with the proper VAM.

Re: Back on the road build.
Yeah, if I was going for smog testing, I'd be pretty concerned about passing with a mis-matched VAM and ECU. You're likely to end up lean in this case, which I think runs up the NOx. Can you borrow a working small VAM from someone long enough to pass?

Re: Back on the road build.
Ok.
Good to know.
I haven't found a small VAM yet.
Darren who I borrowed the ECU from said his passed with this combo.
I'm still looking for parts.
