Okay, back on-topic, here's some pics of the rear shock towers getting prep'd for the roll cage. Removing those little spot-welded support boxes was much more annoying than I thought, but required for what I'm doing. Note, cutting and grinding works much better and faster on these than trying to use one of those spot-weld cutters.
The 1/4" steel plate you see here will be glued (where access is unavailable) and mostly welded in place to the floor. This will make the base of the boxed in area forward of the shock tower that the rear cage legs will be welded to. It didn't really need to be 1/4", but I need to bring the floor height up about 3/8" here, so this will mostly address that need.
And here's the right side. Why 2 pieces, you ask? One piece couldn't be maneuvered into place. This will allow a mid-span weld into the floor any way.

And off we go to the fab' shop (http://barryluysterracecars.com) we go this morning...
Note the tape on the hood. Minutes before departure, it occurred to me that I didn't have a functional latch; the hood was held down only by it's weight. Probably would have been okay, but didn't want to risk wind getting underneath and blowing the hood open on the 25 mile ride to Hackensack.

It'll have coil-overs eventually, so ride height can vary as needed. I've got a couple different sets of wheels, so there too, it'll vary.EVIL_XR4 wrote:Do you have any idea what the final look is gonna be? Wheels and ride height and all that? Is it just for the hell of it or are you gonna use it for utility purposes?
All I really need to give it a somewhat more complete look is getting the rear bumper done. With nothing back there right now, it's giving the whole package a very unfinished look. I've got a couple possibilities on that - most of them are more "truck like" in keeping with the back half theme.
I figure this thing will have a very well-defined, 3-way schizophrenic personality once completed.
1) Oddball, one-off "show car"
2) Serious race car (hence the roll cage)
3) Utilitarian parts/stuff fetcher

Re: Brati?
Sure do. Barry actually stopped by my house before agreeing to the job. It's really not that much different than a typical roll cage job. Just a couple areas where a little creativity is needed.phild765 wrote:Do they know what they are getting into?

You're only just realizing this now?BeefFajitas wrote:This is nuts!
In a very twisted way, it's actually an extraordinarily practical approach for what I need in a Merkur. If you had seen my car when it arrived at Carlisle 2005, absolutely stuffed beyond the limit with stuff, you'd sorta understand. Did I mention that I already have a camper top for this thing?

I thought it was a little obnoxious to mention that one of the goals of the vehicle was "serious race car" but I'll let you have that, simply because I would have an extra good time at the track if you showed up to participate with it. I wasn't even going to say anything about you saying that. THEN you mentioned having a camper top. WTF?!Then, DPDISXR4Ti wrote:Did I mention that I already have a camper top for this thing?
I was under the impression that you had deturboed this vehicle. Am I thinking of a different XR? Now you just need to put a turbocharged 2.3 Duratec into it, preferably with a Lima 2.3 head on that block.

I'm just surprised and disappointed you beat JV to beating me up over that statement! The "serious" part was actually just to counter my initial #1 comment which was, "Fun show car". Somehow #1 got changed, but #2 didn't. Whatever... Maybe "Fun race car" might be more appropriate and less controversial.anglin wrote:I thought it was a little obnoxious to mention that one of the goals of the vehicle was "serious race car" but I'll let you have that, simply because I would have an extra good time at the track if you showed up to participate with it. This vehicle is "De" lots of stuff right now...
De-turbo'd
De-radiator'd
De-heater'd
De-interior'd
De-instrumented
etc, etc , etc.
Just because it's missing stuff today doesn't mean it won't have it installed tomorrow.
Funny story... The C3 in this car is a whisker away from death, but most days it works well enough to get it in and out of the garage. Yesterday, it worked fine getting on and off the flat-bed. So far, so good. Then as I drove it into the designated bay at the fab shop, it slipped out of gear about 10 feet from where I was headed. No amount of shifting back and fourth put it in any gear. I just shut it off and we pushed it the last 10 feet.
At least I'll be prepared to have to push it around on the return trip, but maybe I'll try dumping some fluid in first. Regardless, once I get it home, the first two projects will be:
1) Make the radiator support removeable
2) Remove the drive-train; replace with T5 and known-good engine.

Perhaps since you mentioned "race" car, he might be assuming that you plan to rally the thing since that's the only form of racing there is.DPDISXR4Ti wrote:I'm just surprised and disappointed you beat JV to beating me up over that statement!

Some feedback from Andy Saunders.... (http://www.andysaunderskustoms.com)
"Pretty cool. i like the way you have joined the two seperate bits, well done. Are you thinking of canting the front door rear posts forward though, personally i think it would look more camino and less biult. just my opinion ...
Good luck with it though.
ANDY"
I was flattered that he thought I might actually have the skill to fabricate custom doors.
