Re: Folvo Racing Build

Post by kiwimanz »

Thanks for the awesome info John,
I had my mate at Ivey engine in Portland mag my crank and block before I did any work. All looked good, now it's over being hot tanked, blasted and bored for the freeze plug conversion. Had Manley knock out a set of extreme duty exhaust valves, intake were from IPD here in town.

I tore the complete guts out or the poor old XR... seemed a shame to toss lovely leather seats and take a sawzall to the dash. But I was on a mission. Car gutted and removed 400 lbs.... well that what the scale and the dump said lol. Of course yanking up the carpets etc reveal the dreaded rust! The area of the front and rear floor pans where the meet the rocker panel were soon reveal as the Fred Flintstone mobile! So I'm doing the old "Ed China" (aka wheeler dealers) cut away the panels and stich in new steel. I will reinforce that area underneath with some box steel. Rest of the shell is in pretty good nic!

The running gear.... well stumbling point, any one know where to get either rebuilt CV axles, or CV's them selves. Stupid internet sellers claim the 100mm on center flanges fit ... not so...mine are 85mm on center. So I'm at a bit of stationary point on those.

Plus I'd post pics, but it won't allow me!
Cheers

100mm OD 25 spline CVs are stock. Same as some BMWs. Here's an ebay listing for some here in the US.

Spring Rates

Post by kiwimanz »

Hi all,
Anyone have a good base line on spring rates for road racing an XR?
The car of course will be completely stripped down with polycarbonate windows etc, hoping to be close to the 2000lb mark w/out driver.

Cheers

Here's a good baseline from the Group N setup and the page after is the Group A. Rear springs for the group A are in the shock position (coilover), multiply by 2.7 for the equivalent stock location spring rate.

Flaring the fenders

Post by kiwimanz »

So I'm having a bit of brain drain on wheel size that I can get away with.
I'm thinking of mounting some 108mm to 100mm wheel stud adaptors or re-drilling the hub and brake hat.
There seems to be endless choices of some great looking wheel in 100mm bolt cent, not so much for 108's unless I'm missing it in my search.
I bought a set of flow forged wheels from Goodwin Racing for another project. They are Chinese made, but dam nice and strong wheels and a fantastic price.

Anyway it's what I can fit. I want to run 15 x 8's up front and 15 x 9's on the back. Series 45 - 50 tires. (Hoosier DOT slicks) Thing is, the front struts are very intrusive to front tire width. The adaptors are 25mm thick so this would give me the spacing, but now due to the offset of the wheels, I have to flare the fenders. My car has the RS500 kit on it, but it just fiberglass babble arch over stock body work.

Thinking of doing away with the buddle arch, and cutting and flaring the fender..... anyone have an opinion?

Cheers

Some folks have gotten away with trimming a bit of the spring perch to gain a bit of tire clearance, and some go with spacers it seems (or both).

There are a multitude of threads with info on tyres, don't know any off the top of my head though, search around.

Block plugging and cut on the deck done.
I just bored all holes to 15/16's as that's the only size of plugs I had at the time
