Anyone like their Chromebook?

I got the $199 acer chromebook and used it for 5 years. Then I got a message about the Auto Updates ending. During that 5 years it worked awesome. Been using it for a couple months without the updates and it seems ok. But I didn't know about the end of life or auto update policy stuff. If I crack it open and change the read only function I can install some other OS, but it will never be as secure. Not sure if I'm going to get another one or not.

Another cheapskate er frugal batard here.

Bought Samsung Chromebook 5 tears ago come January. Don't ever recall notice(s) re auto updates during that time; have been getting notices about this/that version/thing no longer/supported. Couldn't see what I could do to satisfy those, so I've ignored them. All functions are still working normally ATM.

When there's that little arrow pointing upwards down at the bottom, it downloaded the updates/security stuff and wants you to restart.

Don't have a Chromebook, but I still occasionally use my webOS TouchPad online, just because I have it. I can't imagine it won't work for a year or two after the updates stop but at some point, the lack of security updates and the possibility of your personal info being at risk should get you to pony up for a more modern replacement. Five years is a long time in computer time.

At some point the browser will be so old I won't be able to log into ebay or paypal. It will still be much more secure than my Moms win10 machine. I will either get a new chromebook or put a LInux distro on this. But I don't want to crack this thing open (to remove read only screw) just yet. The read only feature that let's you just restart (takes like 10 seconds) if you have a problem is the best thing about a chromebook. That and the 100 hours or so I saved in the last five years not running anti virus scans, anti trojan scans, anti malware scans, anti adware scans, downloading all those, comparing old hijack this lists with newer hijack this lists, looking up the suspicious ones, and sometimes calculating a checksum. Whew.

I have been a Linux user since late '90s and there are a couple of the distros that will work on a tablet now. For a home computer you can set a dual boot install and keep Windows along with Linux if you have a large enough hard drive. Any semi modern device should have plenty of space for this. I like SUSE but all of them are good...

Ya I started messing with them recently and they work great. I put a Ubuntu one on a not too old HP. It went on easy, sound worked, video card worked and it looked good to. Way easier than it was in the 90's.

Ya, they had some even less than that in today's bestbuy ad. I think one was just 129. I worried this one would be so cheap the keys would stick or I'd have some issues but it's held up pretty good. I like how I can just pull this out and be all booted up and online in a few seconds. The netbook.

I love mine.
It was a refurb, so CHEAP. Works just fine.

I got my Mom a win10 netbook last Christmas because I thought it'd be easier for her to use. It is horrible. I think it could be the worst product Microsoft has ever released, and that's saying a lot.

I also saved on a tower for myself by going with a refurbished one. Bought online from a MS certified refurbisher out of Canada. It had a new HD in it for some reason that was larger than what I paid for. I guess they just copy an old drive onto that. Thing was so slow you could barely play with screensavers and desktop wallpaper. Then I plugged it into the cable modem and the HD and CPU went up to 100% and just stayed there. Guess that's why the original drive was toast, and likely why it was returned to DELL. Luckily I was able to buy an installation disk off ebay for a similar 64bit dell with win7 for only a couple dollars. Then wipe everything and install that using the numbers on the side of the case. Works great now. You'd think a refurbished PC would mean it's refurbished. Guess not.

The problem is that it's Microsoft Crap.
Now that I got a Chromebook , I'm totally done with them. I still have a working laptap, but I only use it to store pictures.
I use the chromebook for Internet... it's much cheaper and they just work.
