i thought it was innovative and definitely made your car more recognizable.

Thanks Ray. It took an awful lot of "outside the box" thinking to make it work, given that the engineering and fitment of the Pontiac grille is totally different from the stock XR parts. A buddy who works with Ford in Dearborn stopped by on Memorial day weekend (family in the area), and he arrived to find the following around the front of the car:
1) Sawzall
2) Circular saw
3) Assorted blocks of wood
4) Big Hammer
5) Hack saw
6) Assorted files

His response... "You must not be getting serious yet; I don't see a MIG."

About half-way through, I realized it could never be a "done well" project without a huge investment of time. But I'm way too stubborn to quit, even when it's the right thing to do. :P

There's no doubt that this:

is a long way from this:

However, nearly every custom, homemade grille for the XR4Ti I've ever seen has looked like a big pile of poo. I've seen one I almost liked, and that was because the owner used the headlight sockets from another grill to create (the all important) depth to the pseudo-Cosworth opening. Cutting a hole in a grille ranks right up there with that awful creation Brad brought to the show! :D And Brad's grille took WAY more effort. (I don't know if that's a good thing.)

To get this sucker back on topic...

Here's a picture of my almost-favorite XR on the showfield.

I've sent the owner of the car an avatar-sized version of the picture so he can advertize his "whiptastic handling" right here on the MCAF.

My initial plan was actually to build something like what you see in the Photochopped picture above. I quickly realized that even if I had the skills, it would have been a 100+ hour project to end up with something that looked like that.

Completing this "project" half-assed as I did was very eye-opening and educational in a "big picture" sense. It will make me smarter about how I approach the Brat project, so in that sense, the time invested wasn't wasted at all.

I dunno... I enjoyed the grille. When I was first rolling over to the showfield on Friday (in my Toyota...) I spotted some stupid pontiac heading the other way.. happened to glance in my mirror and saw a cossie wing on top of a stock 88/89 wing! I almost pulled the ebrake right then and there and followed him back to the hotel...

I totally enjoyed waving to the convoy cars headed in the other direction Friday afternoon. The puzzled looks were priceless.

Now, now; KP; you're taking that too seriously when it wasn't intended to be more than an experiment in peer reaction.
