List of 2.3T specific ECUs (EEC-IV) and what they came in

Post by merkurdriver »

I was working on a list over on the MS forum of 2.3T specific ECUs (EEC-IV) and what vehicles they came in and thought it might be a good idea to include them here as well. I've also added which VAM air meter matches each ECU as well. Hope this info can be a helpful source of information.

You missed a few of the SVO/Mustang GT Turbo/Capri computers and to fix a few mistakes in your list TF was not used in the either the Mustang Turbo GT or Capri RS Turbo it was only used only in the 1984 Turbocoupe. The PJ was only used in the later 1985 SVO Mustang and the 1984 SVO mustang had either the ZBA or the TE computers.

To add to your list.

Mustang/Capri
Computer TA used in the 1983 and 1984 Mustang GT turbo and 1984 Capri RS Turbo with a T-5 transmission and Small VAM.
Computer ZBA and TE used in the 1984 SVO mustang with a T-5 transmission and Big VAM.
Computer TJ used in the early 1985 Mustang SVO with a T-5 transmission and Big VAM.
Computer PJ used in the later 1985 Mustang SVO with a T-5 transmission and Big VAM.
Computer PE used in the 1985.5 and 1986 Mustang SVO with a T-5 transmission and Big VAM.

Turbocoupe/XR7
Computer ZGA used in the 1983 Turbocoupe with a T-5 transmission and Small VAM.
Computer TF and TC used in the 1984 Turbocoupe with a T-5 transmission and Small VAM.
Computer PC1 and TA used in the 1985 and 1986 Turbocoupe with a T-5 transmission and Small VAM.
Computer PK1 used in the 1985 and 1986 Turbocoupe with a C3 transmission and Small VAM.

All the above computers used the 30pph injectors except the PE, PC1, and PK1 computers that use the 35pph injectors.

You're right, I totally forgot about the Z series boxes as they are few and far between.

As far as the PJ only being in the 1985 SVO and not the 1984 SVO, here is the info I have:

1984 SVO - PJ calibration code 4-05S-R0, part # E4PZ-12A650-B
1985 SVO - PJ calibration code 5-0DS-R0, part # E5ZZ-12A650-JA

I knew this would be a great idea. AMX, where did you find that information. Also how come the PC1 on the Turbo Coupe used 35pph while the TA on the Turbo Coupe of the same year used 30pph?

Reformatted your list:

15.TA – 1983-1984 Mustang GT Turbo/ 1984 Capri RS Turbo T5-Man, small VAM, 30pph injectors
16.ZBA – 1984 SVO T5-Man, big VAM, 30pph injectors
17.TE – 1984 SVO T5-Man, big VAM, 30pph injectors
18.TJ – Early 1985 SVO T5-Man, big VAM, 30pph injectors
19.ZGA – 1983 Turbo Coupe/ XR7 T5-Man, small VAM, 30pph injectors
20.TC – 1984 Turbo Coupe/ XR7 T5-Man, small VAM, 30pph injectors
21.TA – 1985-1986 Turbo Coupe T5-Man, small VAM, 30pph injectors
22.PK1 – 1985-1986 Turbo Coupe C3-Auto, small VAM, 30pph injectors

You're right, I totally forgot about the Z series boxes as they are few and far between.

1984 SVO - PJ calibration code 4-05S-R0, part # E4PZ-12A650-B
1985 SVO - PJ calibration code 5-0DS-R0, part # E5ZZ-12A650-JA
This is one of those details that is confusing. So here is what happened at Ford. The very first SVO Mustangs came out with ZBA computer to support the newly added intercooler. It didn't work very well and the car was having problems with mid range part throttle surging. So what Ford did was replace it with a modified version of the TA computer that became the TE. The TE computer fixed the mid range part throttle surging but the computer used the old software idle control, and this just never did work right. Ford then redesigned the computer and came out with the PJ for the 1985 Mustang SVO. Then to fix the problem with the TE computer Ford replaced the software in the TE computer with the PJ software and release a replacement parts computer and relabeled the computer as PJ for the 1984 SVO Mustang. A lot of the computers were replaced at the dealerships under Warranty by Ford, but the 1984 SVO Mustang never came from the factory with the PJ computer only with the the ZBA or the TE computers.

Before someone asks about the TJ computer. The TJ computer is the TE computer with the PJ idle control software. It's really just the fix before the fix. Very few of the early 1985 SVO Mustangs came with the TJ computer and it might be one of the rarest of the turbo ford computers.
CrazyJay wrote:I knew this would be a great idea. AMX, where did you find that information. Also how come the PC1 on the Turbo Coupe used 35pph while the TA on the Turbo Coupe of the same year used 30pph?
The TA computer is a carryover part. What Ford was doing was using up old stock. Ford projected to sell more of the Mustang Turbo GT and Capri RS Turbo cars that originally had the TA computer but poor sales and the release of the new fuel injected and cheaper 1986 5.0L Mustang forced them to drop that product line. There was no firm date they changed over either between the PC1 and TA computers because Ford was manufacturing the TA computers for the 1986 Turbo GT that was never released.

A lot of the information I got is from an engineer that worked at Ford on the SVO team. What a lot of people don't know about me is that I didn't buy my first turbo Ford car I built it (1987 TurboStang viewtopic.php?f=30&t=15651). When I did this there was no aftermarket for the 2.3L turbo Ford. I wanted to use the best parts I could so I called Ford directly for several weeks until I got to talk to someone that could answer my questions.

This one uses the 35pph injectors not the 30pph injectors.
