Centralia PA - 40+ year mine fire - Who wants to go?
Who's up for a road trip one day? I hear the best time to go is while the leaves are down - maybe late March?

Reminds me of the Chernobyl website, just a lot less creepy.

Centralia is only about an hour from Carlisle - I think you should re-route your trip in 2010 Steve .....eerily rising up from the smoke and ashes comes a throng of Merkurs, for as long as the eye could see.
It's also about a half-hour from Harry's U-Pull-It, the largest junkyard in the world (or so they claim). You could probably just skip Carlisle entirely and hang out in the coal region for the weekend.

Yea, it's very easy to spend a FULL day there, and still feel rushed for time when it's near closing time. That's why I don't think I'd recommend a one-day Centralia/Harry's trip, unless it was only going to be a "casual" visit to Harry's. I haven't done it in a while, but the best bet is to go there mid-week (Mon-Thur) during the summer, when they're open 9AM - 7PM.hEaT wrote:Harry's is pretty impressive. I was only there once and it was raining. I wish I could spend a day in there browsing.
Hmmm, maybe a Thursday visit to Harry's, sleep-over at some PA B&B, and then a Friday morning visit to Centralia on the way to Carlisle? Admitedly that goes against my earlier suggestion of a visit to Centralia when the leaves are down, but just thinking out loud now...

Interesting, it's labeled on the map but seems like it's not really there if you try to get an exact match.

It's sorta too bad that the state has knocked most everything down as they've claimed it. I'm sure the town would have much more of a "ghost town" factor if everything was left standing but vacant. Yes, I realize the State of PA probably didn't take my ghoulish interests into account when they made these decisions.

Centralia loses its ZIPFrag wrote:Ahhh, nm... I thought if you put in a zip code that Google would figure the city out for you.

A longer video-documentary on the town.

The video is a little dated at this point. The home of Joe Moyer, who died in 2004 of "Black Lung", was torn down in 2007. Here's some before and after pics...

I'm thinking maybe sooner than that - perhaps the same week as Spring Carlisle, in case someone wanted to wrap that in and make it a multi-day event. You could actually make it a multi-day event without the Carlisle tie-in, as there's two U-Pull-It's within a half-hour of Centralia, as well as a car museum in Pottsville, about 15 minutes away.Rooster wrote:This would be cool to have a meet or cruise to sometime in the summer
Hell, maybe I'll put the camper top back on the Brat and go camping in central Pennsylvania for the week!
