what is that??? and Do I need it??

Post by mikecozza69 »

Hi,

okay, just got in from fitting the induction kit on my xr. i still need to rig up a bracket to properly secure the MAF and the coolant overflow bottle, thats my next project, but there was a black pipe running from the o/e air box to a black box bolted to the inner fender, what is that black box and do I really need it?? I know a guy who removed his (but he's away on holliday so i cannot ask him)

I think you're referring to the charcoal canister, which takes fumes from the gas tank, filters them through charcoal, and then sends what's left up to the airbox to be sent through the engine again. Is what you're referring to underneath the airbox?

It's definitely something to keep if you have emissions testing where you live... beyond that, I don't think so, but maybe somebody else knows more about its function than I do.

Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding!!!! We have a winner. Beyond emissions, I have no clue what purpose it serves.

All that's left then is to decide where/how to vent the tank. Personally, I think that just letting the fuel vapor vent to the engine bay is a bad idea.

petrol fumes into the engine bay.... yeah, ill have a rethink about this and see what i can come up with.

on my old escort rs, the tank vent was by the filler cap IIRC.

back to the drawing board on this i think....

i think i just stuffed the line into one of the holes in the frame rail on that side just to get it out of the way and then promptly forgot about it. its been there for 8+ years now.
