Yes, two manual hand cranks on early cars, one was recline and the other was the bolsters.

A quick observation. I pulled the VSS out of my 3/25/88 build Scorpio with the intentions of replacing what I thought was a bad VSS out of my 3/27/87 build Scorpio. What I found was interesting. The 3/25/88 build has a 20 tooth (orangish red) gear in it and the 3/27/87 build had an 18 tooth (greenish) gear in it.
Were there different rear end ratio's in the the automatics from early in the run to late in the run?

Sales lit says they all got 3.64 manual or auto. However, reality is that autos got 3.36 just like auto XRs. I had 6 VSSs on hand recently, and I counted the teeth on all of them. They all had 18. The gears were all grey, or yellowish I think.

Here is a picture of the one I pulled from the 3/25/88 Scorpio
Here is a picture where I have tried to show the teeth. My camera didn't do a good job, but I tried to show the teeth with the green marks.
My guess is the VSS was replaced at some point and they just put the wrong gear back on it.
Have a good night, or morning as the case may be.

That hasn't been my experience at all. Each of the numerous Scorpios I've owned or worked on over the years has had a 3.64 and the olive green speedo gear.milehighXR wrote:However, reality is that autos got 3.36 just like auto XRs.

This may have been an attempt to fix an over reading speedo, as the Scorpio speedo, from the factory, reads about 10% faster than actual. (Test yours with a GPS).FocusSVT wrote:Here is a picture of the one I pulled from the 3/25/88 Scorpio

The speedo gear used in the A4LD Scorpio is a standard part, used in all sorts of vehicles. Cheapest option would be U-Pull-It shopping, diving under Fords w/ auto transmissions. You should be able to come home with a couple different gears in short order. Otherwise, you can find them on-line all day for $10-15.milehighXR wrote:So where do we get more speedo gears for our cars?

Try these guys
http://www.transmissioncenter.net/speed ... a.htm#ford
The gears are about 2/3 down the page.
I ordered an odometer gear from them and it worked fine. They shipped fairly fast also.

Are you sure that bottle shipped with the car new? All the Merkurs I have looked at all have P/Ns starting with 85, or 86, and NOT the US standard of E5 for 85. Unless of course the part was replaced stateside with North American parts.
