Fan in front of radiator...???...??

Post by clevelandmustang »

Just got a 88 XR4TI last week, just got it running, fan in front of radiator does not come on, I assume this may be why the car overheated before I owned it, I ran it wath A/C button in to get cooling...

Is the one in front the main fan? if so what controls it or kicks it on??

the back fan is the main fan. The one in front is the a/c fan. I would check your relays as those tend to be the main cause of fan malfunction.

yup, that is how it is configured. Does your fan kick on around 210*? Good chance the car overheated because the fan switch in the coolant flow isn't functioning.

The front fan (in most XR's-- apparently, there were some different wiring configurations), only comes on when one or both of two conditions are met: Excessive temperature, and excessive pressure in the A/C system. I ran my XR with only one fan in the Phoenix summer without any overheating-- granted, the A/C wasn't working, so the extra load from that wasn't imposed on the cooling system-- but under most conditions, one fan is sufficient to keep the engine cool.

I have not gotten it to kick on at all yet, the temp gauge goes about 1/4 way up, not sure what temp that is, I may put some real gauges in it asap to get a better reading...
