whats wrong with my Xr

Post by scubba.steve »

So turns out i had a bad exhaust valve in cylinder 3, replaced that. Put the head back on and got everything buttoned back up.
Now its smoking bad and has no power above 4k rpms. What could cause my car to smoke like this? It idles fine and runs fine. but is deffinitly smoking pretty bad out the exhaust

What color smoke out the exhaust? Did you use a new head gasket when you put the head back on?

Yes used a new headgasket, torqued head bolts at 30, 60, then 90
Timing is spot on. Smoke is whitish color, light grey

The pvc valve i have is for the newer valver cover, i am using the older valve cover that says 2.3 turbo. The pvc does not fit into the vavle cover. Its all there, but not hooked up. I DO have the newer cover that fits with my pvc, I can swap it out no problem.... But i do not see how this would give me all the smoke

The PCV valve doesn't go in the valve cover. :dunno
They only used one PCV valve on all EFI 2.3 turbo engines.

does the smoke smell sweet or like burning oil?

Is it just burning off or is actually coming out of the exhaust?

take the hot side off, look at/into the ports. if one looks diffrent then the others , i would blame something in that cylender. if its black and oily then i would say its oil. if its all washed out, wet, and or clean of any carbin then it be water. water smoke will be white, smell sweet. oil smoke will be darker, almost blueish.

never had one of these heads apart. do they run valve steem seals or no?

off the top of my head, oil could be geting in by a worn out or messed up seal, exsesive play in the valve guide could let oil pass as well. might have put a grove into the guild when you replaced the burnt vlave, that could do it aswell. might look into doing a leakdown test. if you have alot of blowbye and pressureizing the crankcase then oil can work its way up top.

O its deffinitly oil, and yes it has valve stem seals in it. I should have replaced them while i had the head off.
So i loosened the exhaust manifold today, had some one step inside and give it some gas..... Smoke was deffinitly rolling out of cylinder 3... Could this be either a valve stem seal, or a piston ring? If i do a compression test will it tell me if the ring or seal is bad? I got a local shop here that will install new seals and cam bearing, clean the head up for right around $150...
Wish i went ahead and did this while i had the head off..

seeing how its the same cylender that you just replaced the valve in, i would take a wild guess that the seal was riped or torn in the prosses. a burr on the end of the valve could do it easy. still a compression test wouldnt be a bad idea to do, just becouse.

if you pulled the valve out of the other head and droped it right into this one, i would sugest geting them to reface the seat and the valve. the old burnt one could have done some bad things to the seat. wouldent need anything fancy, just a 45 deg. cut until it cleans up. this step could posibly save you from haveing to do all this a third time.

im saying all of this with out actualy seeing the head, engine, or anything ealse. so dont take it as a proper "this is whats wrong" but more of push in the right direction.

http://forum.merkurclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=17810 Heres a pic of the old valve in the head... Looks like it could have done some nasty damage in there. Im no mechanic by no means... So i did not know what i was looking for. I just know i was excited to get it all back together and then it smokes like a train....

to give you an idea. you should be able to block off the port and be able to hold a vacume in it with the valve siting on the seat.

block off the port and hold vacuum? i normally pressurized the cylinder and hold them up.

Definitely sounds like a valve seal. Did you check the head for trueness / flat surface after this? Heating the head enough to burn an exhaust valve might have tweaked it.
