I hope this question isn't taboo since I'm talking about another forum. But I'm just curious if there is other information over there especially since my search for a XR is going to be ramping up over the coming weeks.
My apologies to the admins here for any offense, I mean absolutely none.
I registered a few days ago and still can't post or even VIEW the boards. I tried to contact the admin but it wont even let me do that. Can anyone help? I signed up with the same screen name I have here.
Thanks for any help! |

No problem asking such a question - it's not like either board is a commercial venture. Certainly there's unique information in either location, and no doubt, lots of overlap too. No idea why you haven't been approved - often, the initial confirmation message gets filtered out as spam - we have that issue here too. _________________ Brad

I find this forum much more fun and useful for 90% of everything, the other is where I ask questions about the track rat for racing's sake, you have to be prepared for some egos, but people like Grayson (on this board too) really know what they're talking about if you're building a dedicated track car. Otherwise yeah, I lurk but don't post over there as much.
It's ironic because my post count is so low over there I get $#!* on for being a 'newbie' with more years and experience working on/building a dedicated track XR than all but a few on there. _________________ HY35w, ebay FMIC & BOV, 3" all the way w/testpipe or cat & Magnaflow, 75#/hr, 255lph, MS-I V3 w/3bar, T5, 4-point roll bar, rear tower strut brace, gutted, lexan rear windows and sunroof, Odyssey drycell, Koni reds up front w/KYB in rear |

Thanks for the email addy.
I can definitely appreciate that the people here may be more friendly and its nice to hear everyones experience. However like I said in the coming weeks my search to purchase an XR of my very own will be ramping up. And I dont want to miss out on an opportunity if one happens to be posted there and not here. Ya know? I can't wait to have one in my driveway instead of having to be a closet fan! Out with my Jeep ZJ and in with the XR!!
Thanks everyone for the help and responses! |

Hey, don't get rid of that Jeep till you get thru the basics on your Merk!
It's probably normal to have a different comfort level for the various forums, but there are helpful and knowledgeable folks on both, and a bunch of cross-posting happens (which is better than cross-dressing). One might be considered a little 'younger/hipper' than the other (something I haven't been in years), so that's why it's good to have choices.
Anyway, good luck with your purchase...look forward to seeing those photos! _________________ Ed, Nashville

Dont worry - I'm not stupid enough to rely on my XR as my only form of transportation!!!! lol
I also have a fun little 91 toyota corolla, 2 door, 5 speed that is my little beater. 35+ mpg, handles corners pretty well... and you just can't kill these 4AFE motors if you try! Runs like a top!
I'm extremely excited to get a XR in my driveway. Years ago when my best friends dad had one and he was thinking of getting rid of it I was begging him to sell it to me. One day it was gone and I found out he got rid of it for extremely cheap. He told me he didn't want to sell it to me and then me end up with problems with it because he would feel bad. Years later we were talking about it and only then did it become apparent to him that i was looking at it as a project - not a car to drive daily. He told me well heck - I would have GIVEN it to you if I knew that. Damn near broke my heart and that was 8 years after he got rid of it!
I know of one sitting in someones yard not to far from me, I'm going to knock on their door sometime in the next few weeks as a starter to see if they want to get rid of it and if its even worth buying. Plus I'll be searching the forums here, craigslist... pretty much whatever it takes to get one in my driveway!!! |

good choice for a reliable daily driver.
erik hand approves all registrations over on merkursport. he's a busy guy, so sometimes it takes a while for him to approve someone.
understand that merkursport was set up to have a "guys hanging out in a garage" feel. so yeah, discussions do get real heated sometimes. as long as you have a thick skin and don't take things too personally, you should be fine and find lots of good info there as here. _________________ ian the re-animator |

What type of project are you looking at? Weekend warrior? Autocross? Rally? Fun street demon?
I'm almost saddened by how cheap these cars go for, given their rarity and ability. _________________ -Ray

Purpose for the car is hard to describe other then what I have in my head. I want something quite balanced with a tip to the race side vs creature comforts. I'm not looking to hack a car up at all. AC will go though! lol
I do want to autocross the car. I do want to take it for the odd trip to the drag strip for fun. However, I am more of a handling guy in terms of making the car nice and balanced vs making it go the fastest it can in a straight line. (I used to race karts a few years ago, probably stems from that!) That said - my first goal is 350 hp, later on and if possible without breaking my wallet wide open 450 in one of these cars just seems like it would be a load of fun without making it a monster to care for. So yes, I'm after something quite quick! I definitely would like to ditch some of the Merkur cladding in favor of some RS500 gear. I love the look of the cossie grill with the euro headlights. Really makes the front end shine in my opinion.
I have in my head what i believe to be a nice methodical approach to obtaining my goals. Most of the appearance items will be done last in hopes of tripping on good deals on the RS500 gear as I go along. First thing I want to do is go through and just make sure the car is running tip top and any common issues are taken care of. After exhaust upgrades and an intercooler, the next thing I want to do because I've been dieing to try it out - is ripping out the stock ECU and going right to a Megasquirt unit. I think its absolutely awesome that you get to build the unit yourself. I have a extremely nice soldering iron (Hako unit) that will make the soldering part nice and easy. I really do not have a ton of knowledge on things of this nature but I'm a fairly smart individual... I'd be willing to bet with a bunch of reading and some questions to people that already know what they were doing - I can easily get it done myself.
I know my list of upgrades to get to my HP goals is going to grow quite quickly because of drivetrain limitations. But that's why we call them project cars. I'm not expecting to make it happen within 6 months - I just want to get the car running very well and then slowly upgrade one thing at a time so I can still have fun with it as I go. I can't friggin wait to start!! |
