So season opener is today / tomorrow. Today was a shakedown, tomorrow is first points.

Last night went to put the car on the trailer. I've been working on the tune on and off the past month or so. Still very rough, but drivable. Anyway, i have no clue what happened but my car wanted to buck / stall - ie, not move at all - under any load. Would go off the charts lean. First thought -fuel problem (duh). It's a MAP sensor so that eliminates major concerns of vacuum / boost leaks (which would lean to rich under any load, but anyway).

Was beyond livid pissed last night. The car ran great last weekend. Ended up adjusting the tune adding fuel below 100kpa (vacuum) to make up for it. Added some more this AM during shake down.

Notes:

3.36:1 rear end is not for me. We have a tight courses and i need that mechanical advantage for torque. My launch control last year was set to 2800 rpm and you had to feather the throttle after to not spin tires (when they are hot and sticky). Today was mid 40's / low 50's - and i reset launch to 4400 rpm and it still wanted to bog.

Screw all that. I'm putting the 3.64:1 gear set back in. Longer courses i'll just use 3rd gear. I still was able to manage times comparable to what i should but i had to go back into first gear. I gained another 1000 rpm of rev during tuning (would go too rich before and not rev over 5k -seriously, that rich). I can get to 6300 now so that helps my top end a lot.

No pics yet. Didn't spin out. I did get rather sideways a couple times but nothing huge.

I'd swap gear ratios tonight if i had gear oil. It's only a couple hour job. I'll just run first points event with the tall gears and maybe consider assembing another diff for longer courses or something. Diff swap is sub hour. Just have to justify another eaton purchase...

I'll probably swap back to the shorter gears this week or maybe next weekend.

Not so fast, there. Ray and I raced the car on Sunday and the car didn't seem that powerful to me. I didn't know any better, though, since it was my first time driving it. It did seem to come onto boost very slowly. I just assumed it was the 3.36:1 rear ratio. I did have a *ton* of trouble getting the car to launch right. I've raced half a dozen XRs and never had so much trouble coming off the line. Five launches and never got a good one.

Ray will probably get in here eventually and post exactly what the problem is since he figured it out last night. Hint: it's not the rear end ratio.

I am going to keep the ratio and figure out if i want to change it after the next event or so.

Anglin and I noticed HORRIBLE power output. IE- no horsepower at all. Still good enough for a class win (split btwn first and second place was 0.005 seconds... with Anglin beating me). I noticed a serious lack of oomph, boost, and my normally loud blow off was very... quiet.

Okay, boost issue.

Get car home, put car on stands (again), pull bumper, grill, intercooler plumbing and inspect. Find one tiny pinhole in one connector - not enough to warrant this kind of issue.

Check wastegate actuator - functioning (was worried it was sticking open)

Next up, pull downpipe and inspect wastegate.

What's this? Something is stuck in the wastegate keeping it open. Piece of slag from i presume the header is stuck in there.

Yeah, that would be a problem. Remove that. Put car back together.

Will be nice to run with more than 100whp again :p

Anglin - i'm going to lower the launch RPM again as if the car behaves like she did last year, we do NOT want it quite that high. I'm also going to check the tune again as i added a degree globally to try and help the power output problem during shakedown on sat.

You running @ the next event or no?

He flew over to run with me on opening weekend and critique the car and offer suggestions. It's part of the full package - you didn't see that on the mc2racing website?

Picked up a kirkey aluminum racing seat (for the pass) and a 5 pt harness for the passenger side. Made me nervous having passengers over there in the stock seat with a regular seat belt.

Hopefully pegasus racing gets me the attachment points by this saturday - will be fabbing the seat mount this week.

It's pretty amazing to me to look at how much progress i've made on this car - not so much in the car itself, but in the learning curve of how to make stuff fit. My old welds make me shudder. Live and learn, right?

Am off today so i decided to install it.

Modifying the stock rails to accept a race bucket... Tig welded. Tried acetone for the first time. Works pretty well.

Finished welding...

And installed. Re-dyed the fabric - it was pretty faded.

The R888's are surprisingly good in the wet. Car did well.

Things of note:

1. Exposed air filter makes the car smoke when it's wet. Need to build shield for wet weather.

2. My windshield leaks. Gotta fix that.

3. Just because i think the car needs to have some change at each event, my turbo oil drain started leaking.

I was the event chair and got to design the course. I decided to go with a shoestring course. Minimal cones, use of the entire lot, and good practice in the rain.

Anyway. Piccies.

Looks like a perfect day! If you're not going to run R-compounds, you may as well pray for it to rain at every event. I really need a rain tire setup for my car, for I only have the Hoosiers. If it rains, I'm done for.
