Hyperfest @ Summit Point, WV

Post by PDenbigh »

I went to Hyperfest at Summit Point Raceway this weekend and managed to get the car out for a few sessions. Got to meet Rob Booth there as well and take him on a ride, and am looking forward to some pics he took.

During one of the sessions on Saturday (Advanced group, no TT on Saturday), I was chasing a GTR around the track (not bad for a 4-banger!). Turn 10 is a fast right hander that I like to use as a great way to pass people. Well, just as I was getting on it and boost was building, three cars ahead of me decides to slam on the brakes for a white flag (wrong response) which causes a near-4-car pileup. Right in front of me was the GTR and I darn near bought myself a GTR bumper.

Here's the video that driver put together. I just sent him my in car perspective so maybe he'll compile them all soon.

More to come!

That was a little too close for comfort! Sounded like he saw what was going on a bit sooner and had backed out of the throttle but maybe hadn't hit the brakes yet? Hopefully you were running street tires and didn't flat-spot your tires too much Peter. But still, cheaper than a new GTR bumper.

Nope, definitely had Hoosiers on :-/. They're old and ready to be changed though!

He didn't hit the brakes at first, you're right. And I couldn't see around that wide thing to know what was up! Made for a fun story and a new friend though.

Like the exhaust flame when I downshift to take off again?

Wow Pete that was bit close.

How much power does your car make? If you didnt get caught behind those porsches i doubt he'd have lost you at the end there.

What does the white flag indicate in your organization? Last lap of the session? Slow car?

A Standing white flag means slow vehicle - slow car or EV in this case. A waving white means last lap.

With all due respect, that seems like an inherently bad idea to me. A flag of a given color/design should always mean the same thing-- and, if possible, they should be universal and constant throughout all of racing. Who has time, or the ability, to decide whether the guy's waving it or holding it still as you flash by at 100+ mph? Was he waving it, or just raising it? You'll be into the wall and/or another car by the time you figure it out.

There's a blue flag for that.
