T9 BAT short shift kit problem...
Okay so I'm not sure if this is a common problem, but I installed the short shift kit from BAT for the T9 transmission in my 88 XR4. All gears slip in nice and smooth, except reverse. I literally have to grab a hold of something and apply intense amounts of pressure to engage it into reverse.
Any ideas guys?
Thanks,
Jason

Hmm...wonder why.
Thanks for your reply Mike, do you know of any ways to make it a bit easier?

No I don't - i know peopl who have cut/grinded on it a little to help getting it into reverse but still had trouble with it.
Re: T9 BAT short shift kit problem...
Hmmm I was wanting to get one of those but not sure now. Please post with a solution.

Hmm...thanks Mike. Grind the fork or the spacer plate?
Either way, if cutting/grinding doesn't help much, not worth doing I guess.
Anyone else out there experience and/or solve this issue?
Thanks

Pretty much the same problem here. The wife used to be able to drive the car before the shifter swap but now its pretty hard for her to drive because of this. I thought it had to due with the change in the pivot point but never looked into it further.

Same problem too huh? It's kind of inconvenient you know? I feel like installing the original shifter back if I can't figure this out...
I was thinking about what you said about the change in pivot point, you might be on to something there. Maybe file some off on the ball or shaft? I don't know, just throwing some ideas out there.
Anyone else?

Well, I figure I'd call BAT and ask them if they had any ideas what to do about this reverse issue, and they said they have never heard of this happening before with this kit. They aren't sure what it could be or why it's doing it.
Hmm...

When I had a T9, I used the "Comp. Shifter". I've only seen the "kit" once, and have never driven w/ one. One thing to check is the nylon bushing on the shift rail. I assume you had to disassemble the shifter when you did the mod.

Re: T9 BAT short shift kit problem...
I don't have this problem with mine. It does, however, buzz like crazy. When I snug it all up, it is tougher to shift, if I remember correctly. It has been a while since I had it out to try to cure the buzz.... I also think it makes a difference to make sure that the plastic bushing, etc is in good shape.jason0heman wrote:Okay so I'm not sure if this is a common problem, but I installed the short shift kit from BAT for the T9 transmission in my 88 XR4. Re: T9 BAT short shift kit problem...
Thanks guys for the replies. The instructions BAT gave said to make sure the gear lever is pressed fully down on the shaft pressing on the nylon bushing, but maybe it should be a little looser?
Tony, how tight did you make yours? Maybe I pushed too hard and too far down on the nylon spacer to the rubber gaiter.
I replaced the plastic bushing even though mine looked A okay. All looks good inside as well.
Thanks

I was also thinking of taking it apart and grinding the alloy spacer down so that I could push the ball down more closer to the fork, think that would help at all guys?
Think that's what Mike was touching up on...
Thanks.

This might work. I'd be more inclined to 'make' a temp spacer tho.

Hmm...good point Mike. Home depot trip?
Now, of course I epoxied the new gear lever onto the shaft...tips?
