Greetings!

Post by Iowaxr »

Hey there guys! New to the world of Merkur here. I recently picked up a fairly solid 86 XR comp rolling chassis to play with. Always liked Merkur since they were pretty unique and have an affinity with odd automobiles.

I'll post up pictures later when I have a bit more time but in the meantime I'll just describe what I've got. To my knowledge the car was originally an auto but was converted to a manual at some point. Prior to my ownership the engine and trans was removed and the car was stored away inside. I ended up getting a fairly clean car for $400 in the end. Not sure what I'm gonna do but time will tell.

Thanks for having me!

Welcome aboard! :cheers

Curious to know what ECU and rear diff you're running: the PK1 from the auto, or something else? Also, ditto on the rear diff, which was 3.36 for autos, and 3.64 for the manuals.

Also looking forward to pix and more info on the car.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys!

Well a little more about the car, I was told by the fellow I bought it from that it's owner before him (2 owners back) had about seven XR's and was well cared for. Now the guy I bought it from was a 20 something year old who didn't seem to appreciate what he had and he tore out the little 2.3 turbo, ECU, A/C, heater blower motor and manual trans conversion and had intended to do a V8 swap but he never got done. I ended up with a full interior (other than a missing headliner and trim from the lower side of the steering column) and decent exterior. I know it may upset some of you fellows but I will likely go V8 as its just easier than trying to track down the correct power train. I hope I'm not stepping on toes by doing this. I am actually genuinely excited about this little car!

These are the only pictures on my phone right now. I'll add as I get

What Mike said! Just don't do a V8 conversion like this!

Haha absolutely no way I'll be doing it as poorly as that guy had. I'd rather be proud of my work than that.

The closest I got to your neck of the woods was thru Iowa City on my way to Kalona.
But I am planning on attending at least one of the Friday ClassyChassy cruise ins at the Coralville Mall this year.

Actually looking at June 30 because there aren't many events on the 4th of July weekend. Will confirm when it gets closer.
