87-89 Brake MC Kit

Post by Andy82GT »

My front brakes are seizing up, already replaced both calipers. Already purchased a used Master Cylinder, but would rather rebuild than go through the trouble of install and it being bad also, but Raybestos MK1717 kit is nowhere to be found? Have any of you found this or suitable seal kit?
Assist most appreciated!

Are you sure is isn't the flexible hoses between body and caliper? They can swell closed internally preventing the piston from properly retracting.

X2.
Typically happens on one side though.
On that MC kit, it says 85-89. I have no direct experience with it, the MC are different from mid-86 on.

Yep, early MC is different. Plenty of parts for those, go figure.
Got braided lines, wonder if those can collapse, and on both sides?
Gonna go ahead and pull MC and check it out...thanks for replies, will update.

Braided lines will prevent the rubber from ballooing out, but typically won't stop them from collapsing in. I do agree that it'd be unusual to see the same effect on both sides, but in that sense we're talking about a street-driven car that's getting routine maintenance. If the car sat for a while, anything is possible. Some history there would help for sure... because I don't ever think I've even heard of a master cylinder trapping pressure... that's just as weird. :)

Well, even though I cannot find the elusive rebuild kit for these (Raybestos MK1717), I went ahead and pulled the MC to check it out, removed lock ring and washer, but the piston won't come out!!!

I notice that the Bumper to Bumper parts warehouse in Monroe, LA has a remanufactured MC for sale. It is a good way to solve the non available MC kit problem as it is already rebuilt. Just a thought.

Thanks zxr250cc for the tip... Soooo...

I got that remanufactured Master Cylinder from Bumper2Bumper, removed fuel lines and vacuum lines for access, bench bled and installed MC, bled all 4 corners, and now the pedal goes to the floor! Checked all fittings, no leaks. Re-did entire bleeding process, still no good... looks like I got a faulty master! @#$%&!!!!!!

Why are these so hard to come by? It almost seems I will have to revert back to 85 MC and booster!

Does ANYONE know where I can get a new MC or a rebuild kit for an 87-89? Or a David Godfrey T-bird adapter? Or any other options?

Any assist most appreciated, bros!

Hi all,

It is possible that another rebuilt one might be available. I will know later today.

Hi all,

I think I found one in Philadelphia and will be able to let you know in a few days as the holiday coming up slows down shipping of items. I have arranged to have it shipped to Tulsa. (If it truly exists and I don't have a call back saying it really wasn't there.) Let's all cross our fingers for good luck! I am not a vendor in here and only trying to facilitate getting a hard to find part.

Found a kit supplier? Or found a place that rebuilds master cylinders?
