Speaker wire colors.

Post by shadowwolffe »

What color are the speaker wires for a 89 Scorpio?

And specifically which are the positive and negative for each location.

the front left dash the yellow is large connector and on the front left door the yellow is small.

I need to cut and splice the right connectors because the new speakers have a large and tiny connector.

That doesn't seem to give info on which is pos/neg. The little one should be negative, but it sounds like the stock ones are both the same size? Sometimes the black stripe is neg or dashes is the positive. This site says negatives are black. Surprised actually that merkur is listed.

Unfortunately they all have a stripe, black or dark brown.

The problem is the the dash speaker and the door speaker. On one the yellow is large and one the white has the large connector.

If they were both the same I would assume the small connector was negative.

12volt .com lists them wrong. I checked there before the first post.

One side is ground, just check each side for continuity to ground with a DMM.

I cant. Interior is disassembled and I'm trying to put it back together. everything is out.need to get door panels on and dash pad before they get damaged and I don't have a radio in the car and I don't really want to reinstall the amp and cassette deck right now if I even can .

I want to put the car back together.

Sounds like you will have to start at the radio and test each wire that way. Set the voltmeter to ohms and see if you get a reading through each wire (continuity) then mark them. I'm gonna guess that the small/large spade connectors for dash and doors seem wrong, and that is because the front channels L/R have 4 speakers total. So two speakers are run in series to save the internal amplifier one that channel. Good luck.

The supposed issue eludes me...

I replaced speakers on my Scorpio with new ones a couple years ago. Individually removed each old speaker. Noted each new speaker had one large and one small wire prong matching each old speaker. Individually mounted each new speaker and connected existing large connector and small connector speaker wires to new speaker. Repeated until each other new speaker was connected. No splicing needed. Didn't bother identifying colors of speaker wires. No issues with speakers functioning.

YMMV

each speaker in each location has a yellow wire and a white wire with each location having a dark stripe per location on both wires.

Factory speakers have one large and one medium connector.

New speakers have one large and one tiny connection.

Front left dash has the white as large and the door has the yellow as large connector.

I have to put the tiny connectors in the right spot +/-.

Wouldn't even worry normally but removing the dash cover I do not want to remove all that crap again.

I'm not reinstalling the factory radio and amp if it even works.

this is a full interior replacment due to mold/mildew everything came out and is being swapped.

Still don't see a problem.

Ignore all wire colors.

Connect new large prong with existing large female connector.

Squish the existing medium connector so it grabs the tiny prong securely.

EOS.

Can't picture why you couldn't connect the radio and amplifier leaving them just hanging by their connections or loose in their mounting frame slots so you can confirm the speakers work correctly.

BTW, removing the Scorpio upper dash isn't that big of a deal (compared to XR dash); and it gets easier as you do it a second time, then a third time... Which is quite likely when you need to replace vent motor gears, a vent motor, an ABS pump relay or ABS computer relay.

YMMV

After you do it a few times, an XR dash isn't a big deal either. Not like my Capri where there were only a few wires to reconnect, but not too bad.
