XR4Ti vs. Sierra 2 Suspension Parts: Same or Different?

Post by patentgeek »

I'm installing a coil-over + rack-and-pinion steering conversion kit on my 1966 Ford Cortina Mk1 GT. The kits is manufactured in the UK and requires using some stock suspension components from a Capri Mk-1/2/3, Escort Mk-2, or Sierra 2. The Sierra 2 parts are considered to be the most robust of the three options.

My question for the list is whether XR4Ti suspension parts are identical to the Sierra 2? I was unable to find on-line parts schematics for either car, so I'm unable to compare Sierra 2 and XR4Ti part numbers.

I'm in the U.S., so Sierra 2 / XR4Ti parts should be easier to find than Capri Mk-1/2/3 or Escort Mk-2 parts.

The conversion kit manufacturer says the specific parts in question include the "front leg, hub and disk assembly" which I think translates into the spindle carrier and everything between the spindle carrier and the wheel.

Thanks for the help in advance.

This is a pic of the above described kit installed on a Cortina (not my car) for reference.

The front "knuckles" ; strut slides in the top, steering rack outer tie rod attaches to it, contains (4x108mm) wheel spindle / bearings / lug studs, etc.
(A lot of the LoCost / Se7en kit cars builds call for many Sierra parts)

RWD, non-ABS, non "COSWORTH" part #'s for the Sierra are:

Right side: 87BB 3K170 AG
Left side: 87BB 3K171 AG

U.S. part numbering system for the Merkur is unique on its own and totally different compared to Ford of Europe's system, so you are not going to find "matching" part numbers between U.S. ford and Europe Ford. The Sierra part numbers above are equivalent to the XR4Ti parts.

If you need them or anything else feel free to email me directly merkurdriver@gmail.com for fastest response.

Pictures below show the Cosworth one on the left and the standard RWD Sierra / XR4Ti one on the right. (Disregard the fact the XR4Ti one has a brake caliper adapter bracket bolted to it.)

Disregard the fact the XR4Ti one has a brake caliper adapter bracket bolted to it... However, if you run these knuckles it is really easy with that adapter to stick a big brake upgrade on it www.merkurdepot.com )
