Wheel stand.
The one I had made is MUCH heavier duty than that one. The base is 3/8" aluminum plate and the tube is 3" I.D., 3/8" wall aluminum tubing,
The wheel stand in the picture is going to flex quite a bit if the wind is blowing toward the car, as will a skinny flagpole.
I would position mine so that a breeze would push the stand into the ground. I won't have this issue in the future.

That's the dealership flag.

The Merkur flag is "Stranded: Send Help."

YMMV

This has happened. Cell phone works better than a flag for getting assistance.

Well, I got my new wheel stand welded on Friday.

I want it to look like it's all one piece, so I put JB Weld over the weld as filler.
Yesterday I ground and sanded the epoxy until the radius was as smooth as a baby's butt.
Once it gets warmer, I'll prime it and then paint it with truck bed liner. Gonna look good.

My new pole is a 20 footer (my skinny pole was 15') made of 10GA aircraft aluminum. Everything's super heavy duty.
https://www.veteransflagdepot.com/20-10 ... -flagpole/
The smallest section of this pole will be stronger than the largest section of my current pole.
The Merkur flag will be flying higher than ever and I don't expect anything to bend even in a strong breeze.

Car gets out of storage in just a few weeks. Our club's website is starting to populate with car shows, so it won't be long now!

The wheel stand is finished!
As you can see, it is nothing like that scrawny store-bought one.

Flagpole is ordered and should be here in a couple of weeks.
Car escapes from storage on the 30th.
First cruise-in is April 27th.

Come on Springtime! :headbang

Cruise in night in Barberton Thanos parking lot next to old Winks parking lot Saturday evenings starts soon. I could probably see your flag from my place and drive on over. Here's what the place looks like. Lots of kids around so I'd do burnouts back behind the giant eagle instead. Their gas station has a cool digital tire air machine that's pretty cool and free. And Merkur Depo is walking distance as well.

Here's another video of the area. I talked to the owner of that Ferrari Daytona. It's actually a c3 vette. If you want to see million dollar cars try the Stan Hywet car show nearby in Akron. It's always on fathers day weekend. Really nice to walk around in the green grass and not on concrete. Best place to hang out is in the shade near entrance driveway. That way you can hear the smooth 16 cylinder machines along with exotic v8 and v12s.

Thanks Bob!
It turned out nice... I got lucky with the knobs, a guy just happened to be selling some NOS aluminium ones on Ebay for the same price as plastic.
My wife asked me which one's hot and which one's cold. Hot is always on the left, silly!

I love drive in's! Too bad it's almost 500 miles east. :(
There's a place in Oregon, IL about an hour and a half east called Jay's Drive In that's been there a long time.
They have cruise ins during the week but on June 15, they have one on a Saturday night.
I wanted to go the last two years but the weather was bad.

One of these times (hopefully this time) the weather will cooperate. When it does, I'm going! :cheers

Flagpole is in da house! And it is mega.

Image

Those anti-wrap attachments and caribiners are high quality items.
The O.D. of the base is 3 3/4". The I.D. of the stand is 3 7/8".
Very little slop for the knobs to take up. I don't see this thing bending much.

I'm going to practice raising and lowering it with my regular car this weekend.
I extended and retracted the 1st two segments a few times indoors... it's pretty smooth.
But even with vaulted ceilings it can't get close to max height. It's over 20 ft. tall if it's fully extended.
I'll have the procedure down pat before doing it for real.

Now all I need is my car and a show to take it to.

It's about 60 degrees and breezy today, time for a test.

Flagpole has big spring pins that pop out when they align with the segment below.
The one (easily fixable) design flaw with this pole is there's a little alignment dot on the pole just above the pin on one side only.
If the pin's on the other side of the pole while you're raising it and you miss it, you can pull the pin out of the segment below.
Then you gotta fiddle with it to get it back inside the lower segment and into the hole. This thing's not super light, so that's no good!

So I took a paint pen and made a line that goes all the way around the pole a few inches above the dot.
Then I made another vertical line down to the dot.
You can't miss these lines... line up the vertical line with the hole in the segment below and it pops right in. Result!

Because the pole is at ground level instead of 18" in the ground, the segment you're raising is at eye level instead of chest level.
It moves smoothly, but it's still a pretty good workout for the old shoulders. Going down is no problem. Gravity is your friend.

So I ordered an extra wide folding plastic step stool to get me back up to the design height... Ford Blue, of course.

When it's all the way up, it is as tall as the peak of the roof of my two story house. WAY taller than the old skinny pole.
It sways a little at the top, but not very much. The massive wheel stand does not budge.

I won this credit card sized pouch awhile back and hadn't yet figured out what I was going to do with it.

Image

I got it. I need to make sure I have a small screwdriver with me in case a pin gets stuck.
I put the screwdriver in the pouch and will put this on one of the wheel stand knobs.

Image

I'll take the key ring off and clip the pouch onto the caribiner.
The screwdriver will stay with the wheel stand in the most stylish way possible.

Update: I stole my wife's step stool and this thing is easy peasy. It takes half as long to put up as the old skinny pole.
Tighten down the big knobs and clip on the flags with those nice caribiners. Four pin snaps later, it's up.
In the past I had to pay attention to the wind. Not anymore!

"I stole my wife's step stool..."
I wonder how many items we "stole" or "borrowed" from our significant other to "fix" a Merkur.

Only temporarily...
I got a much nicer one in the proper color scheme, of course.

Big ball, too. :thumb

Out of storage week is finally here! Forecast is for a chance of rain, but no big deal.
60 and sunny a week from Tuesday, so I'll give it a bath.

Man, it was cold! About 50 degrees with a 20 mph wind. But we are a hardy bunch. 46 cars showed up in despite the weather.
This is actually my 2nd time out but the first with photos. Last week it was nice weather in the 70's. Next week it'll be in the 80's.

The Merkur flag is flying higher than ever and we're photobombing Corvettes.
