Is it worth 14k?

Post by andyofcolumbusmerkur »

Is this 30 year old truck worth almost $14,000? I admit it is pretty cool and I haven't seen a nice one in a long time. :?

He's has "Make Offer" enabled. This is how it will sell. He'll never get $14k.

Absolutely not worth 14k with 79k miles on it. People are trying to sell low mile later 3rd gen Rangers for that, and this truck is 20 years older and not low miles. People keep trying to push the market up for these little trucks when they sell them because there was a decade where you couldn't buy a new small truck, but they're also forgetting that you can now buy a Maverick if you really need something small, and that the only people who will pay outrageous prices for a 30 year old Ranger are people who absolutely want a Ranger above all else and won't just buy for a larger truck that is newer and more capable at that price point, and that's a pretty damn small slice of the pie. I hate people who price stuff like this.

It seems like they sold it. Older stuff without a billion computers are becoming more and more valuable.

The reason that sold is because on eBay you can get a geographically wider audience and you're more likely to find some kook willing to pay 14k for a 30 year old truck because of sentimental reasons and because they have the money to throw away. If you look at recently sold listings, you can see a recently sold '98 with similar miles, an extended cab, and 4x4, all making it theoretically more valuable, sold for $4,300. Also, I am no Ranger expert, but from my understanding of the platform, it didn't suffer from excessive and unnecessary computerization like a more cutting edge or luxury vehicle might have, even in later years, mostly because it was a small margin entry-level vehicle.

Check out the sold listings on Toyota trucks with the 22re 4 banger, or the Cherokee XJ with the 4.0 inline 6. You can fix these yourself, get the parts easily through the aftermarket, and they are cool. You could get a Hyundai Santa Cruz or Kia Tasman and plenty of people will. But in 5 or 10 years are you going to be able to get the high tech part to fix it? Are the manufactures even going to make that part anymore? It's like buying a refrigerator or washer/dryer. If it stops working in 10 years you throw it away.
