vibration / noise
vibration / noise
Okay this is starting to drive me bonkers.
Ever since the t5 install i have this noise during the following scenarios:
1. Off throttle decel in gear btwn 2400 and 3000, sound goes away immediately if you slightly press the throttle (or any input) or clutch in.
2. On throttle very low rpm 4th / 5th gear if you depress accelerator pedal a bit. (higher load)
What i've done to try and correct this:
New CV's on the driveshaft
Clearanced any bracket that would interfere with the driveshaft.
Spaced tranny crossmember down
Nothing at all has worked. What i feel it might be is the downpipe hits the tranny bellhousing slightly, but that would move with the motor, and now since i spaced it down a bit, it rubs the swaybar. Thing is, it did this with the t9 too and i didn't have those sounds.
Any ideas? Maybe the tranny is shifted to the left or right via the crossmember, i could slot the holes for that.

Hard to provide any suggestions without actually hearing it Ray. The fact that it occurs under both accel and deaccel would seem to point towards something other than driveline angles. Downpipe is certainly a likely candidate; also check all those steel coolant pipes.
BTW, do you actually have CVJ's on your driveshaft?

I have a driveshaft from a mustang mated to the t5, which goes to the adapter to the diff. there is no guibo, and no CSB now.
However, as far as the d/p hitting - it was the same way with the t9 and didn't make this sound. i wish i could get a sound clip of the freakin' noise the car makes, maybe sam could ride with me and bring his camera to post a clip.
what else. since the vehicle is pretty well gutted, it's very hard to determine WHERE the noise is coming from. on inspection under the car it could be the output shaft of the tranny and the driveshaft - as there is actually some play there (i can move it very slightly)
it's driving me nuts, mostly because i dont feel comfortable racing the car with this kind of noise, and i'm building this car obviously so i can race it!

Ray - read this to become an expert on the subject...

Nobody has ever solved the problem as far as I can tell.

Thank you, that is EXACTLY the problem i have. I just wish i read that before i cut, spaced, and rewelded my tranny cross mount bar. I am going to contact a local machine shop to see if they can lengthen and rebalance my driveshaft about 1-2" (i have to measure it) to take up the slack there. hmmmm.....
i dont know if it's body contact, i lowered my tranny (rear) quite a bit and see no evidence of any rubbing whatsoever.

This is definitely a tough issue, and I'm sorry you are suffering with it also. The good news is that I have autocrossed my car since 2001 with this growling T5, and it's still the best gearbox I've ever driven. It shifts perfectly between any gears at any RPM, even 2->1 downshifts at 35-40 MPH. I don't drive my car on the street because of the problem, which is a huge disappointment, but racing with the noise doesn't seem to be an issue.

Brad,
Sadly - i cannot afford an AL driveshaft at this present juncture.
If you know of any for sale for a good price = please let me know. Right now i'm parting out my wrecked focus to try to afford some things for the XR - but it's going really slowly, and people aren't buying the bigger items (airbags, dash, etc)

Many using one of these could better localize the source of the noise:
Chassis Ears Locates Hard to Find Noises Easily
Chassis Ears STE6600
• 6 mics with alligator clips listen to 6 locations in one road test
• Hear noises that can not be duplicated in the stall
• Essential for saving needless warranty expense
• Improves shop efficiency, revenues, and saves time
• While testing select each of the 6 mic individually to pinpoint noise location

YMMV

I have heard and looked at several T5 conversions and I am convinced the NVH problems are related to the bogus crossmembers and mounts that nearly everybody buys and copys.
Have a photo of it??
