Scorpio Lumbar Replacement?

Disassembling the seat bottom...my earlier summary describes this.. Every hog ring you see you cut...

I forgot to mention removing these "end caps" There are little covers that conceal the screws. When I put these back on I intentionally ran the screw through the leather to help secure it.

Now we get to the crease...

These shots show the hog rings on the sides that need to be removed. But notice the surface rust on the lead screws.
When I was done I cleaned everything up and I lubricated all these and all other pivots points and slides with Tri-Flow spray lubricant.
Also! - When I re-assembled everything these hog rings were replaced with zip ties AND metal bailing wire that was twisted up with a pair of pliers. Sorry I failed to get pictures of that..

Here is the seat kit. i think is was an email special from Banggood.com ($23 as I recall), but I don't see this particular kit with the adjustable switch on their site anymore. I have seen this kit on Aliexpress though. It came with no instructions. Google Search "Heated seat kit instructions manual" and you will find reasonable instructions.

The small gold module has a PWM circuit to provide the 0-5 levels of heat adjustment.

This is the tape that comes with the kit. I used some of it with the passenger seat but I later switched to using Gorilla Tape exclusively

Hey! Who cleaned up the floor!!? Here you can see the wiring coming down from the center console. The side walls of the center console flex so you can scoot the wire/connectors through easily. Open the arm rest compartment and remove the two forward screws and you can lift up the center section to gain access and stow the electrics. You can also see the connector that I tapped into for power. If your Scorpio came with heated seats then you will probably wire things differently since you have a heated seat dedicated harness.

Here are the new pumps installed. I used a small section of fuel line to connect them to the pipes.
They look almost stock and work much better IMHO.

So there you have it. I would say at this point I am no longer apprehensive about pulling out the seats and dismantling in the future.
If you just need access to the bladders in the seat back it is pretty easy.

I somewhat tested the operation of the heated seats. I put the passenger seat in and I connected it up and I hooked up the bare pads for the driver seat and turned it on...and I could feel the bare pads getting warm in my hand. But the passenger seat is so warm from the 90 degree heat it was hard to tell if it was working. I'll post an update on this when I can test it in the evening when the seat are cool. I still may change the wiring around a bit. I may just run the big power wire up to the battery and only connect the smaller yellow and red wires to the yellow/black wire in connector C1967

I'd like to replace the drivers side bolster leather and seat bottom panel at some point. I think after re-upholstering my center arm rest I am ready to do this (see my new post on this side project here: viewtopic.php?f=29&t=37288). But they are not in too bad shape at the moment and I want to drive the car. I have only the smooth leather in my stash. I don't have any of the perforated leather I need for the center seat panel that I would like to replace on the driver's seat.

It is nice, though, to have those lumbar inflatables working again...

Nice job documenting this. I saved the heating elements from some Scorpio seats I junked. I think I'll clip off the quick-connectors and toss them. It wouldn't make sense to use 30+ year-old stuff when new technology is available for not that much $.

And thanks for your consideration. It actually takes a bunch of time to document this stuff. I do hope it will help and inspire others.

One more thing...

You're all going to hate me though, because I can't remember where I got these. But they are the same cable ties that are used throughout the Scorpio. One spot that comes to mind is holding the wire to the Idle control solenoid. Anyhow I used these when I put everything back together and to zip up my cables underneath the seats.

I did not used this type to replace the hog rings. In fact I switched to natural nylon zip ties on the drivers seat because I find that they are stronger than the black type.

As I recall they were called "low strength cable ties". I got them from a website that was dedicated only to zip ties.
I'll dig through old emails maybe I can find something...

I was watching "Wheeler Dealers" S15:E14 "1970 VW hatchback" this evening and I see that the VW used a similar fastening setup as the Scorpio with the sheet metal spikes on the base of the seat back where you pull the front and rear sections of the covering over the sheet metal spikes. You then bend them over after you have everything in place.

One other think they did was to spray silicone spray into the inside of the seat cover to help ease it on...something to consider when I attempt to repair the center section and side bolster in the future...
