Then you got a deal and a half!!! :shock: There's a used one on ebay going for twice that to my door!!! This is probably a stupid question, but what is a precooler? is it like a mini water to air intercooler before it hits the air to air intercooler?

Nice piece!!!! The main body of it looks kinda like a 944 intercooler.

You guessed it. There is a mini water to air cooler before the 7 core cooler. I'm not sure how much cooler the set will be till I get it installed with the water hooked up. I'm putting the tank in the trunk were the spare tire was. Or I may put it else were. This is going to be trial and error. I hope I can keep the water cool all the time. Just have to make sure the heat exchnger for the water is fairly large. Plus with a la swap, rod's header, cold air pick up, and a 3 inch exhuast that I will have over 200 hp. I hope. Plus with the new upper that I'm making should help throddle responce. Plus I love to find deals. :twisted:

I double checked on one of my TCICs: It has a metallic-like label on one side on which all the identifying numbers are illegible, but "Ford" is legible and as well in large, bold black lettering is "BLKSTN." :wink:

Ed, the MS6 suffers from some pretty bad heatsoak and detonation due to the IC being mounted where it is. check some of the boards.

I thought I'd share my intercooler since it's kinda an odd one by comparison. The concensus of opinion that it's a vintage XR specific Ford Motorsports piece made by Turbo Auto in Tennessee. That said, it's not definitive since the core actually has a TurboCar (of Huntington Beach) sticker on it. Who knows for sure...

Anyway, here is what I do know. It appears to be a bottom mount IC (supposedly fitting in the area between the radiator and oil pan), the core is 10x8x3, and the piping is mandrel bent 2". I'm also pretty sure that the core is a tube/fin design (though my knowledge of IC designs is minimal). Anyway, here are some pics for documentation sake:

you mean where i mount it in my XR or where it sits in the stock car? it doesn't really matter if it has heatsoak in the standard car, does it?

the MX6 cooler doesn't really work for our purposes anyway though, at least not the way i mounted it. i've decided it's pretty much a crap cooler, i'm not satisfied with how it works, but hey, it was easy.

worked, thanks for the input. i'll add the pics and info asap. let us know the results of how it works when you get it installed.

If Demonfire meant this Ed, and if MS6 is the Mazdaspeed6, that engine may be more prone to detonation than the XR 2.3 for, inter alia, less rich mixture at WOT as a means to better gas mileage figures. Re the heatsoak it's undeniable that IC will pick up heat while idling or crawling, but it's fed fresh air from directly under the hood front lip via a narrow duct (not large, to be sure) to and through the IC. The key as always is motion. Is it the ideal stop-light race-for-pinks after we get out of this friggin parking lot set up; no. Does it do the job once underway; yes. :wink:

Yep, that would be tube/fin. The passages through a bar/plate IC are flat.
3" mandrel bent exhaust, Ported/Polished head, 1.89/1.57 valves, Gutted uppper/Knife edge lower intake, T3/T4, LA3, Big VAM, Cold air intake, 40bob header, Gillis valve, Forge BOV, Mustang SVO T5, Conquest intercooler, 20psi.

That's what I thought. I did do some reading about IC design, and it appears that there are different advantages and disadvantages to all the designs. For example, bar/plate seems to have the best flow through the core (which is better for performance, but tube/fin apparently causes less disturbance of air through the core (allowing for better flow to anything behind the core). Oh, and plate tube/fin is apparently a great compromise, but has less durability than the others. Oh, and it appears that they all cool about the same in general. It just seems there is a lot to think about... design, placement, size, pressure drop, air disturbance, etc. I'm just hoping that the huge investment (i.e. funded by Ford Motorsports) in development on mine will equate to good performance for the XR.

BTW, anyone have any actual performance data on any of these ICs?

have you read the links i posted about intercoolers? do it. the user "turbominivan" knows what he's talking about, and he's DEFINITELY worth listening to.

as far as cooling equality, it all depends on the core, but to be honest, often times the bar and plate cores are better. read the links, you'll see what i mean. really the only benefits of a tube and fin are that it's cheap and it doesn't block air to things behind it.

I did read a bunch of them, but there is also enough "noise" in 'em to get distracting. That said, if you re-read what that guy says, it is essentially the same as indicated. The plate/bar design has better internal flow than the tube/fin (extruded or not). I also realize that the bar/plate design will cool better per square centimeter, which means it is a more efficient design. That said, if you use a larger core in another design, or use more tubes, then you can compensate for the differences in efficiency. Its just a matter of trade-offs.

On a less academic, more applicable note, I think it is more important to match a proper IC to the application. Bigger coolers often cause bigger pressure drops, which isn't good. Too small and it won't be able to support the power/boost requirements, no matter what design it is. I just figure the IC has to meet the needs of the application, and if it does so effectively, I don't think the details of design or size really matters as much, which is why I asked the "Moose is on the table" question I guess.

Yes, by MS6 i meant the Mazdaspeed 6. A lot of people are having problems with the car during warm weather and low speed (ie, not highway speed) lack of power. the car pulls a lot of timing when the IATs reach X temp (not sure) but there is a bunch of information on it on the MS6 boards. I was researching this car as i was considering purchasing one to replace my SVTF.

that is absolutely not true. while many large intercoolers have a lot of pressure drop, it is not because they are large, but because they are of poor design. the best way to build an intercooler is with lots of internal finning and LOTS of core.

for example: a stock Dodge Mopar Turbo II intercooler has TONS of pressure drop. the internal finning in the stock bar and plate core is so dense, air can't get through so easily. At lower boost pressures it's an excellent intercooler because of its high thermal efficiency, but when you begin running more boost, it's terrible. one of the best intercooler setups i've seen is where they take that dodge core, and add more core in parallel. something like a triple dodge core will still have the same excellent thermal efficiency of the stock core, but since there is so much more area through which the air can pass, there is much less pressure drop. by tripling core area, pressure drop is minimized. HOWEVER, THIS ONLY WORKS IF CORE IS ADDED IN PARALLEL. if you add core in sequence, pressure drop WILL increase.

in most cases, bigger is better. :D

but then people ask "well what about the volvo and saab coolers? they're huge, but they have tons of pressure drop." yes, they do. they suck, and are a poor design. the core is only about 1.5 inches thick. great for packaging, not for flow. when you've got an intercooler on a factory car that COMPLETELY covers the radiator, it's gotta let air flow through the core to get to the radiator. i think saab and volvo engineers had this in mind more than actual flow characteristics.

you also mention how the tube and fin core causes less internal disturbance, and it seems as though you are listing that as a benefit. However, mixing up the air inside the intercooler is what allows the air to transfer heat. the only way the air gives up its heat is by coming in contact with the fins, and when the air is just flowing straight through the tubes, this doesn't happen, and the thermal efficiency of the intercooler is very poor.
