Just brought a Scorp back to life, need help with the engine
Hey all,
I just got one of the two Scorpios I bought up and running, after replacing the master cylinder assembly, the blower motor and the A/C compressor. This is all on a car that hasn't been on the road in a couple years.
Here's the problem, I'm trying to get her up and running, and after a tune-up of new plugs, wires, cap and rotor, I’m seeing a signifigant amount of miss/hesitation when I try to rev her up. The problem is pretty signifigant when the engine is cold, its almost impossible to get the engine to open up, you have to feather the throttle to get any RPMs out of it. Once she warms up, it will stumble when you stab the throttle, but usually recovers. I checked base timing which looks OK at about 9º (or at least ok enough not to try and loosen the well placed dizzy bolt). Here are my thoughts:
1) Old fuel, the fuel tank was fairly empty, so I put about five gallons in along with some Lucas injector cleaner, but I may not have run it long enough to clear all the old fuel out of the lines.
2) Vacuum leak, I’ve check over almost all the vacuum lines, and cannot find a leak, but it seems likely there is one, since when I pull the hose off the vacuum canister next to the passenger side firewall, the engine does not seem to notice.
3) EGR valve – I haven’t have the chance to check this yet, since I do not have a vaccum pump.
Anybody have any suggestions as to what to look for first?

Have you run codes on it at all?
It may need to be run a bit more to allow the injectors to clean out a bit, or you may have one stuck closed. I know they ar a PITA to get to on the 2.9, but maybe if you can get in and tap each of them a couple times. I know we ran into this issue on a buddies SVO that had sat for 2-3 years. It would not fire at all. Then we stopped for a sec, tapped each of the injectors a couple times and it fired right up.

okay here are a few questions
had the car the batterie away for more than 24hours???
when yes its normal because the eec IV must new learn about
the engine will running as a tractor
have you change the fuelfilter???
how long was the fuelcell empty and where stand the car in a garage dry or stand the car outside with open weather????
the fuelcell maybe rusty inside and the lines and the filter are full with rust
or water from condensation
why the engine is 9° before top deat center in wich manual is that described for the fuel?? 91 roz????
because normaly all 2.9 engines have 15° before top death center with catalitic converter and 2 oxygensensors
how many oxygensensors the sorpio have
and last but not least the water temperatur sensor when he not works

Hoschy - Before Saturday, it did have the battery off for a week or so, but it was not running great before I unhooked. I have not changed the fuel filter, but its on my list of to-dos. 10º timing is what's listed on the emissions label under the hood.
US Scorpios have only one O2 sensors.
Finally I'll need to check the water temp sensor.

okay maybe it will helps sorry that the decrees are in celsius
but the ohm ratings are interesting
believe me 80% of engine trouble the ect sensor make it
you have 3 rows

Jake- You won't necessarily get a CEL if there is a problem. Also, if you have a cheap sweep VOM, you can check codes. I've never used a code reader to check codes...I bought a $5 VOM years ago....works fine.
Make sure the car is up to temp before running codes. The ECT may be bad, but I'd run codes first before I start replacing stuff.

Well, I ran the car again last night and it ran much better, which is leading me to believe it just may be a fuel issue. At this point, I think changing out the fuel filter should take car of most of the problem, but we'll see. BTW I was under the car the other night, looking at the filter, is it just my car or is the line running from the tank to the filter a flimsy plastic jobby?
Unfortunately its a book, and its a bound book too, unlike my XR shop manual which is in a binder. Its nice to be able to take out pages and copy for dirty work, which I can't do with the Scorp manual.

You don't need a code reader to pull codes from the Scorpio, only a small jumper wire connected on one end to the single contact wire and on the other to (IIRC) the upper right hand contact of the multi-contact connector. With those contacts jumped, the malfunction indicator light on the dash (the Check Engine Light) will blink out the codes just as a code reader does. Absolutely no difference.
