Haha well its just an option. If I do do this swap I'm certainly not going to baby it. But overdrive would be nice. However since I have a daily driver now its not necessarily required
But I'd like to avoid an automatic in general.
I guess my hypothesis right now would be to use a
donor engine from explorer/ranger, with custom mounts or scorpio mounts, (whatever fits) use a ranger M/T harness and ecu, and either the new mustang t5 if it fits or a frankenstein t5 with a magical bellhousing and a custom driveshaft
Doesnt sound all that bad really. Not sure if 01s have the anti theft keys but they dont have electronic throttle so thats kinda nice. They are also pretty readily tunable.
I saw this on-line somewhere and figured I'd cut and paste in here just in case anyone decides to do a Cologne 4.0 swap....
the difference in ANY later 4.0 heads isn't in the ports or valve pockets
95-up the chambers are smaller and intended to produce more swirl
Swapping them onto an engine with 1990-94 pistons will forever ban
you from the "Regular" and "Plus" grade fuel pumps.... unless you live
in Denver, Cheyenne or Flagstaff.
If some silly bugger out there wanted to turbocharge a cologne 4.0 I'd
use a '99-01 shortblock with '93-94 heads
the late shortblock has the "lightweight" rotating assembly
common to the 4.0SOHC and thus is "Rev safe" to about 6200rpm.
the Early 4.0 was never intended to reach 5000rpm much less exceed it
and the early ones are rev limited to 4950rpm.
Later on they reduced this to ~4600rpm.
If you really want "Balls" get a later vehice with a 4.0SOHC engine.
Just avoid the early ones unless they've been out of the chassis to
replace the timing chain cassettes (the actual cam drive chain guides
were a problem on the 97-99 SOHC engines) the other two chains are
as reliable as the phases of the moon.

I'm still very interested in the 4.0 sohc swap. And I miss my Merkur.
I always envisioned doing this swap for the ~200+ hp, torque, reliability and fuel economy, and maybe tacking on a 75-100 shot of nitrous for when you need it.
I'm not sure if it would make sense to go crazy with forced induction on the 4.0 platform since there are probably better platforms out there for that kind of power (5.0, 4.6 modular come to mind)

With that sort of logic, you could also say, "Why bother turbo-charging a 2.3 - just stick a V8 in it."
Although I don't own one, I happen to like the idea of a boosted V6. Dave Compton did a rear-mount turbo on his Cologne 2.9 Ranger. I similar approach on a Merkur with a 4.0 would be "all that".

I get what you're saying but the 2.3t is a proven platform to not have lower end issues to huge amounts of power. I was just saying I didn't do much research into how much power the 4.0 SOHC block can handle (even with forged internals) so I'd want to look into that before I did a crazy turbo setup. I know people made huge power on the 4.0 OHV block though.
I like the idea of a 6 cylinder turbos too.. for a street car I think its a nice combo and you'd have room to stick the turbo(s) right in front of the motor
The way the 4.0 sohc engine in our '02 Explorer hauls itself, a family of six, and all their luggage up mountain grades leads me to believe that putting one in an XR with nearly half the weight removed would give very satisfying results without forced induction.
I don't think you'd be disappointed at all.
