Make a fairly detailed CAD assembly of a Merkur ?

Post by yottabit »

I was wondering if anyone would be interested in this. Not sure if I'll really have the time to contribute to it, but I think I could justify it because I'd be furthering my Solidworks skills and knowledge of cars at the same time.

I thought I would start off with the suspension since that would be probably the most useful thing to be able to play around with in an assembly. I thought it would be handy because people thinking about modifying the control arms or making other major changes would be able to see the impact of it first hand in an assembly.

This would be dependent on people to upload pics and dimensions though for me, because I won't have my Merkur around too too much longer to be able to take the measurements myself. I do have the FSM though.

If everyone wants to submit any pics they have of the various suspension parts, and any measurements they have, that would help me be able to model it.

i like that idea. maybe i can work on some drawings too. we could shoot the files back and forth and collaborate and eventually model an entire xr.

Yeah that sounds good! It will be a lot more encouraging if a couple of us get involved. Also, maybe we can model parts from pictures just to get it basically right, post a pic up here of the dimensions we need, and rely on our bretheren to get us those dimensions.

What version of solidworks do you have? I have 2006 and 2008 student edition. I'd prefer to use 2008 but if you have an older version you won't be able to read my models I don't think... so maybe I should use 2006 for the most compatibility. Watcha think?

Modeling the struts:

Anyone have any other pictures? All I have is 1 of my old KYBs. Ideally pictures of the car would be nice.

I'll have to redo it of course because I totally half arsed it and its not to scale at all but at least its something to get people excitedish

I'm gonna have a lot of Qs about solid works. I usually do all my stuff in Mastercam...

What 3D formats can you save in from that program?

that is really cool! I'd love to learn that stuff, it's come a long way since I took classes in CAD. Don't suppose that software will run on my really old mac, will it?

i think i remember something about a mac version, but it didn't work that well or something.

and it definitely won't run on an old computer. solid works is a major memory hog. and you need a super workstation video card. gaming cards don't work well with it.

i had to talk the boss into letting me buy a new $2700 pc just so i could run 2008 at work.

There's a ton of file extensions it has the option to save as but I think the only real important ones are edrawings, pro-e format, vrml and universal 3d. You can usually import a solidworks model into a 3d rendering program like Blender. As far as I know you can't save it in a backwards compatible format.

Personally I find the solidworks sys. requirements a little overrated and I've never found the graphics card to make that much of a difference, as long as you don't care about realview at least. At my work I ran 06 on an old pentium4 computer with integrated graphics and it ran fine for small assemblies. Now I have a core 2 duo laptop that runs 2008 just fine except it doesn't do realview.

SolidWorks is the shizz. I'd love to see a Merkur assembly, but it sounds like ONE HELL of a project. When you are ready I'll throw in a solid diff mount! Here's my photorealistic version of the mc²racing diff mount in blue just for you guys!:

I can save in almost any format with Mastercam X3. I can read almost anything too. I can even save backward compatible Mastercam files(except to earlier versions of X for some reason).

Yeah it's the modeling curved surfaces and meshes and stuff like that that gives me trouble... and they don't really teach it at my school either as its more of a product design thing. But I still want to figure it out so I can model car stuff.

And yes it would be one ridiculous project... but I figure even if we just model a bunch of parts for fun and get at least one aspect of the car put together (i.e. complete 2.3t engine or complete xr4ti suspension) it would be very cool!

BTW did you take that picture using photoworks or just realview? It looks pretty nice
