If an XR4x4 dies in a garage, and nobody hears about it, did it really happen?

I love the guesses. You guys are awesome!

Here's this evening's work. Working on cars and metal is so much easier and less annoying. Broke two fricking drill bits. In wood! WTF?!

Image

The pseudo-chassis is now on a rigid frame that will support the weight of a full suspension, wheels and tires and it's at a good working height. The crossmember is already on there. Let the games begin!

I'm thinking (hoping...) custom caster/camber adjustable setup, with front mount sway bar. :D

That car used to be an XR4x4-converted XR4Ti. That's Grayson's reference. It's already modified to accept the XR4x4 front crossmember. (Tim did some clearancing.) Though, it would probably work well for prototype work for non-XR4x4 component fitment for an AWD setup.

Ooooo. So close, yet so far away! You're describing something that can be bought off the shelf (from Europe). To make it a good "senior engineering design" project I've got to solve a problem that isn't being addressed by other designs.

You know... it does look like a pretty entertaining thing for a kid to climb. It's bigger than it looks in the picture. Those front supports are actually 48 inches tall. The problem is, I'm already terrified that I'm going to slice my pretty face open on the rough edges. I couldn't imagine how quickly a kid would be bleeding from multiple places if he got near that thing. (I'm going to be putting some trim on the edges to protect the metal from being assaulted by my clumsiness.)

Oooo, that would be nice too! The XR practically has the SLA (short-long arm) already. It's just that the length of the short arm is 0 inches. One of the goals of the project is complete bolt-on-ability. An SLA doesn't fit that bill at all (at least not if we want to keep the tires inside the fender well).

FWD diesel/hybrid conversion?

Can't think of much else that hasn't been done.
Adjustable blade-type ARB? √
Compression struts? √
Adjustable versions of every front suspension link and mounting point? √
Active chamber control? √
Active damper control? √
AWD? √ (at least with I4 and V6)

So what’s left?
A practical oil pan for a Lima AWD?
A V8 AWD conversion?
Active ride height via stepper motors on coil-overs?
Recirculation-ball steering?
Practical crash protection under modified bumper covers? (just wishful thinking)

I guess the rickshaw is out as that takes cutting plus bolt-ons – damn!!!

The V8 has been done with AWD (and a turbo). It's apparently a monster and required some pretty substantial chassis mods to make it work. Not for the faint of heart. Can't think of an AWD V6 car in the US, though. Did someone transplant a Cologne engine into an XR4Ti with the AWD stuff?

At any rate, your list of things that have been done completely covers my project with one exception... I'm doing it differently than it has been previously done and as a result you won't have to modify your car to make stuff work. (As it is with existing components, you choose between giving up a really important function or you permanently modify your chassis.)

Who did active camber and damper control?
Practical crash protection under modified bumper covers?
As a side note, the plans for my Cosworth bumper to XR4Ti "adapter" will also include crash reinforcement.

I didn't know a V8 awd had been done. Got any links?

I discounted those based on "do-able with off the shelf parts".
