1988 XR4ti Family Project (Problem building boost 6/29)

Post by aaul00 »

Hey everybody, my name's Andrew Aul and I thought that I'd finally post up the XR that I've had for a while now. Some of you may have seen my questions regarding a radiator, but besides that I've pretty much been scouring the forums for info for the last few months.

The car is a red 1988 with a 5-speed and it's the first Merkur that I have ever owned... actually the second car that I've ever owned. (Yeah, I'm 18... don't judge  ) I picked up the car over the summer after wanting one since the last big Carlisle reunion. I had never seen or even heard of one before that and I was drawn to the fact that so many people had no idea what the heck a Merkur was.

I found the car on Craigslist and it was a solid piece. 103k on the clock but the previous owner had only put a few thousand miles in the 8-9 years that he owned the car. I bought the car with the intent of getting it ready for Carlisle 2010 before I actually put it on the road... that's still the plan. It's incredibly hard to not drive the car, but I want it to be done right. I'll admit that I'm not much of a handyman, so my father has been playing a huge role in getting this thing going.

We started by completely tearing down the engine and possibly tuning up the car for the first time since 1988. We tore everything down to the block and made sure that all was well. Turns out that the engine was in fantastic shape, so everything was reassembled with all new gaskets and hoses. (Holy crap are there enough hoses... we replaced every single one. Thank you BAT) Dad rebuilt the turbo and we replaced the radiator, but that was about it. My father runs a small powdercoating business so we also coated a bunch of pieces while we were at it. All of the lines and the air filter box was coated as well as the intake and valve cover (among other things). It's awesome to have that resource to keep the costs down. :D

Once the engine was all back together and running beautifully, the next thing on the list was a clutch. That thing was ridiculous. That tranny is tight in there. Regardless, we knocked that out in a relatively short period of time which signaled just about the last of the mechanical work. The only thing left was the paint.

The red factory paint was pretty badly faded in certain spots, so we knew that it would need to be redone. The body was solid except for a couple of rust scabs where the lower body panels looked like they had rubbed. Also, the driverside fender was pushed in a bit. Otherwise, the main issue was just the faded pink hue in spots. Neither Dad or I know anything about body work so the car was moved to my grandparents where the next generation back took over. Between my uncle and grandfather, they are both excellent dealing with painting and body work so they offered to help out over the winter.

This pretty much takes me to the present day. Just today Dad went to the local Autobody Products and after talking to a friend of his, came across a mismatched gallon of "Scarlet Red." We got the $300 gallon of bright red paint for the whopping price of FREE. When it's all said and done, I'll have about $150 in materials to paint the entire car... which has me psyched. My next step is to get back over to the car and get to sanding down the lowers. That'll be fun.

All of the pictures that I have are after the engine work. I think that it turned out quite nice. I can post more pics as progress is made and I'd appreciate any feedback or suggestions. I plan on keeping the car entirely stock at least for this year and plan on making my fourth trip back to Carlisle except this time with my XR. (Dad has a 500+ RWHP Lincoln Mark VII that we take every year... I can post pics if you'd like. Haha, we've got to be different :D )

I'd really like to thank my family for the help they've given me so far. I've got to cover it financially, but it's a 3 generation project that I'm excited to be a part of. I'll keep you guys posted as this thing comes together.

Nice post and introduction-- sounds like you have a terrific family, tell the others to drop in and say hello also!

Keep listening to them, and you'll be a very good 'handyman' in short order, I'll wager. Maybe some peeps here need stuff powdercoated? I'd be interested in also seeing some of the other cars/projects you mentioned. That Lincoln sounds badass!

Looking forward to more-- we're here to help. 8)

Thanks a bunch for the welcome. I've already gotten some great input on these forums already.

The Mark VII was actually a feature car in "Modified Mustangs and Fords" last year. We became friends with the senior editor at the time after hanging out with him at Carlisle (We didn't know that's what he did until he asked if we wanted the car in a national publication :D ) The interior has since been redone but everything else is the same. This is all Dad's work. Everything under the hood is powdercoated from the intake to the supercharger. He does all the work himself... but I still managed to sneak into a couple of pictures!

I'll just post the link. They have the article and everything still online.

Thanks again.

Alright! it's been some time since that first intro and I figured I'd give a little update on progress. There's still work to be done, but the I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

First of all, there were a couple of changes in my plans. The big one was that I decided against the free paint. As appealing as it sounded, we were going to have too much work in doing a color change. It's going to be seeing a fresh coat of Rosso Red in the next couple of days.

I also got wheels for it from DiscountTireDirect. After a ton of sifting through crappy looking wheels with less-than-ideal offsets, I finally found these and couldn't pass up the deal.

There have been a bunch of little projects taken care of recently, but the important one that was completed today was the installation of new fender liners. I had searched all over these forums and never found a solid alternative to the excruciatingly expensive factory replacements. Fear not, after a bunch of measuring and trimming, liners from a 1995 Mustang worked extremely well. So for anybody that needs replacement splash shields, give the sn95 ones a try. They were about $25 apiece, so there's definite savings to be had.

I'll be posting up pics as soon as we get this thing sprayed. I can also get pics of the inner fenders if anyone cares to see.

Did you pick these fender liners up for $25/ea at a junkyard used, or do you have a source for new liners at that price? If they're new, you're obligated to share your source. :D

Well, the liners are new... The thing is that I have some hookups at Advance Auto Parts. Grandfather works there, Dad's got a business account... so yeah. They may be a bit more than that otherwise, but they are still relatively inexpensive in comparison. :D

*edit*

I just did a quick search and there aren't as many places out there that have them as I expected. Depending on how you feel about ebay, there are numerous ones listed for less than $30 shipped.

Before you buy Rosso Red, check the paint code (on the driver's door jamb); from your photos, it looks like Radiant Red to me, which was an '88 color. Rosso Red was from the earlier years. I could be wrong.

I guess I'm not the only one that can't believe how faded the car is

But really, the paint codes do match up. I used this page as a reference. I can't vouch for the accuracy of that site, but it matched up with the numbers on my xr. In the few places on the car that haven't faded (door jambs, under wing, etc.), it is significantly darker. Plus, that cell phone camera leaves some things to be desired.

Do you happen to have a part number for the liners? I searched on advanceautoparts.com but couldn't find any results.

I made the mistake of touching my liners yesterday and they crumbled.

Thanks!

I know the feeling, I jacked my XR up one day to see the drivers side liner slide out over the top of the tire and fall on the ground in two pieces....

Only two? Weak! Each car i've worked on has had the liners come out in no less than 12 pieces each.

I don't have the part number on hand right now as I'm currently at work. That said, advance was able to order them through "Keystone Crash Parts" for me. Also, I received two different brands of fender liners (not sure why) and they both worked. The other issue is that I'm not sure what the regular price is on the liners through keystone. I'm actually not sure how much I saved with my business account. The other option would be to go through ebay, but that's up to you.

If you'd like, I can stop by advance tomorrow and get their part number(s) for you if that would help.

I'll also probably be throwing more pictures up here tomorrow. The car's getting much closer to completion. Ran into some hiccups, but I hope to have it road-worthy in a week or so.

And this is what I'll leave you with for now. Just a teaser. It'll be a bit before I can get more pics.

Okay, here are some better pictures. It's not done yet, but I'm absolutely pumped about how it's coming along. I'm hoping to have plates on it this week and have it inspected shortly after. All that's left is the right rear quarter still needs some buffing, the inner doors need to be put in, and some other pieces (fog lights/mirror/wing) have to go on soon. I just got the tires/wheels mounted the other day and I love how they look on the car. Also, I got a borla exhaust system off of a parts car and it made a huge difference... just by going from 2.25" to 2.5" really woke the car up. Here are a couple of pictures even though it's not done. :D
