Re: "Ray's AKA demonfire's XR4Ti build up"
I'm putting together a 2.95 T5z with a .78 overdrive for my car. I plan on running 3.73s in the supra diff as soon as I can find a set. Right now it has 4.30s, but I haven't installed it yet. Max MPH with the 3.73s in 2nd gear will be around 60-65mph. Not sure if that is enough. A taller rear tire would get me closer to 70mph.
It seems the R1-S is available in 235/40R17 and 245/40R17, both are 24.2" tall. Hoosier is also working on a 24.5" 275-285 width 17" tire. I wish it were a 23.8" tall tire though.
I've been considering sending my Konis off to ProParts for revalving and possibly shortening. I am running 450lb front springs and it seems to be under damped, even with them set at full stiff. It could also be because of the bump stops. I'm going to try some shorter ones before I do anything else. I'm also looking at doing something with the roll center up front, although I don't know how legal it would be in SM to switch to a TCA with a monoball for the ball joint and spacers between the upright to adjust the roll center. I wanted to move the inner pivot up, but that isn't legal as far as I know and it would reduce anti-dive.

How do you deal with that short first at launch? Does your set up let it spool (I.E. can you short shift second and let it pull)? It seems you would really only have second for a run. I have always felt the one thing ford did to hamper the performance of the XR was the short first. I put a 2.9 something first in my T9 and it really transformed the car. It pulls first long enough to get the turbo going and doesn't fall on it's face when shifting second, it's right in the meat of the power.Ray wrote:Turbocoupe one with the short ratio first gear - i forget the 4 digit number for it.

Re: "Ray's AKA demonfire's XR4Ti build up"
I agree with you to a point, Ray should go to a "longer" first gear but are goal in autocross is to get to 2nd as fast as possible, that said Chris Grayson had a T5 with the 2.95 and he really like it, for me the 3.35 first works very well because I can shift early get it done and I'm in 2nd with the focus on the course. I think if there was a T5 or trans that fit are XR's with the first gear ratio at 3.15 and a 2nd at 1.99 or 2.05 or somewhere in there would be the best compromise for most XR's.RatFink wrote:How do you deal with that short first at launch? I really don't like to spin the wheel very much if I can help it and Rays gear set probably does pretty easily and to me a tall first gear could be hard on parts, I'm going to get a 2.95 first gear trans to try it out.

I was just thinking out loud to the wife and she said "don't you have bigger tires" so Ratfink some interresting infoDSPXR4ti wrote:I agree with you to a point, Ray should go to a "longer" first gear but are goal in autocross is to get to 2nd as fast as possible, that said Chris Grayson had a T5 with the 2.95 and he really like it, for me the 3.35 first works very well because I can shift early get it done and I'm in 2nd with the focus on the course. I don't know what size tires your running but lets say 225-50-15 tires and you have the 2.95 1st then a 1.81 2nd? in the T9 and I'm running 255-35-18 tires with the 3.35 1st and a 1.99 2nd in the T5 and this is with the 3.64 rear diff. your speed in 1st is 43.0mph, mine is 42.74, your 2nd is 70.0 mph and mine is 72.0mph, very close and I don't think I'm going to the 2.95 1st gear T5 now, a waste of money for one and that would get me to 48.5 mph in 1st

Running 215/45/17s with the same 3.97 trans...it's GREAT for street driving (I couldn't stand the T9 gearing where I couldn't even get though a parking lot slowly without slipping the clutch or trailer-hitching), but for autox I would prefer it longer. I'm still running the 3.64 rear diff though.
My car still hits full boost in 1st even with the larger turbo.

Re: "Ray's AKA demonfire's XR4Ti build up"
I thought that may be the case. Evedently, i'm not even close to the power you guys are laying down. I daily drive a basically stock car with 205/55/15's. Besides the long first gear, the only other mod is a .48 turbine housing, which in my humble opinion is just what the factory should have done to make these cars great. Before I cracked the head on my Silver car, I had the factory short first coupled to the auto diff, Off the top of my head, I think it was a 3:36, but anyway I did like the way that would get out of the hole and still pull second well on some 225/40/16's rims with some middle of the road mods.

Re: "Ray's AKA demonfire's XR4Ti build up"
To be honest i wouldn't mind a slightly taller first and second gear. First is used to launch, and i'm normally in second by the first gate, or very near it. I'm going to focus on tuning a bit first, i need more top end in my motor (timing, fuel, etc) which i think will gain me a bit more.

I love the old guy with the blue hat pointing his finger like to say "you better slow down Raymond" LOL
I love the way the course designers have the course end right at the parking areas/people.

Your courses are only 30sec long? Or are you just that fast?

Ben, the picture doesn't show the full distance btwn the stop box and the edge - we had plenty of room. That "old guy" took FTD.
Yes, the course was VERY short, and i didn't drive very well at all. my best was a 28.5xx and i should have been able to squeeze a mid 27.
Next event is thompson, tho. So that'll be fun.
