Re: DSP to SM build
Ben, have you run an event with the cosworth 3dr front hubs? I'm interested in hearing your thoughts on them. I really want to get a set for my car, but considering I'll have to buy (or modify) shorter struts, it will probably be a while before I get them on the car. Do they provide any additional inner tire/wheel clearance?

No I haven't set those up yet, I might do some mocking up to make sure like you said "have to mod the strut shorter", I pretty sure I'm going to. Thats one of the things I have to call Guy Ankeny at Penske to tell him how low I should have the strut body, so maybe not this year.whitelx wrote:Ben, have you run an event with the cosworth 3dr front hubs? Re: DSP to SM build
Hi Ben,
Just thinking out loud here, but you noted earlier you were looking for more traction. My experience with semi trailing arms has been that the angle of the arm has a lot to do with the way the car responds and "hooks up" I am just wondering if you have ever tried a smaller diameter tire with the same chassis ride height to let the arm have a little more angle and traction. Or maybe to have the bearing carrier ride a little higher in the arm to achieve the same effect.

Re: DSP to SM build
Thank you for the input and Keep more coming but Grayson and I did try the smaller wheel thing (275 35 15) the thing was I didn't change the ride height, I felt like I had more wheel spin because of the smaller tire, let's see if Grayson commits. I don't think I'm having a big problem with wheel spin, with 300 lbs of torque and right when the turbo come on to full boost at a 45 degree turn, I think with this car you will be throwing some counter steer to it.RatFink wrote:Hi Ben,

What about the Cossie doors makes em lighter other than the cladding?
Ben
Euro doors should be lighter because they don't have "crash" (intrusion) bars.

Well I was standing there looking at the XR and said freaking A, I pulling the T9 out!! So an 1:10 min later BAM!! it was out, The thing was I asked my exhaust guy I need to get the transmission out without removing the exhaust, well FAIL!!! next was as the trans fluid that was coming out of the trans has not be change in 7 years of autocrossing, it showed. Next is the aluminum flywheel it needs a new steel ring, hots spots all over it. Thats all right 5 years on the spec 4 clutch very happy. I have a pyropete 4 puck dics & presure plate, your up Pete. The last thing is it looks like the rear main seal is leaking, time for replacement.

Re: DSP to SM build
I know, I know it's been done to death and who hasn't put one yet but I thought I'd make sure it all fit's real nice before I spend hours on my back only to find out I don't have this or that.
Well for 1 the dog bone bell housing is or just about the only bell that works for are cars, from my point of veiw, I don't know/heard of anyone useing any other bell in all of my searches but happy that I had a DB bell sitting here.
#2 when useing the DB bell has anyone found the lever for the clutch fork hitting the body of the XR, I'll have pic's on this later.
#3 I'm useing the Chevy tail housing and the trans mount is just off but workable, I'll have pic's on this later.
Other then this stuff it went well, in the car now but will be takeing it out tomorrow and working on the thing I've talked about, any input or experiences would be great.

Re: DSP to SM build
There is a rare direct pull 2.3L bell housing for the T5 that is similar to the original t9 bell housing. The dog bone bell housing is far more common.
I don't have an issue with the dog bone hitting the body. Which engine mounts are you using?
The GM T5 sits at an angle in the Camaro, not straight up like the ford T5. This is why when installed on a ford t5 the trans mount pad will not be level.

Luckily the guy I bought my t5 swap from figured out where to get a direct pull bell from.

My car is also an 85 Ben, narrow tunnel. My clutch lever did interfere with the floor. I just had to persuade it a bit.
The floor, that is.

Thanks Ray & Joe,
It looked really close and did think it was going to make it, clutch fork I mean, so I'll take my BFH to it just to make sure.
Funny thing about the direct pull bell it's 2.5 lbs heavier, when I was mocking the DP bell and found it wasn't going to work for one reason or the other, I weigh the dog bone Bell and found it lighter, I felt someone was telling me something.

Well it's all done, mock up wise.
Yes the tail housing is at angle but if you use the 92 - 98 chevy camaro with the 5.7, works for the up coming weekend and then I have 2 weeks before the next event, I'll make a little wedge to fit in there for the National's, I may have time before this weekend but I still need to install the Bo-Port cam and still put the T5 in for real.
I really wanted to use the DP bell but I found to many inconsistency with the install from my point of view.
