I found that using an engine crane to remove and reinstall the head helps in aligning it. And prevents damaging the back section of the timing belt cover.

On removal of yhe head, did you keep and reuse the alignment pins in the corners of the block?

Remove the turbo to throttle body hose and sniff for coolant in that passsge.

I can't see how a leak down test will give any more clarity on why/how coolant serms to be involved in combustion of those cylinders.

Because a leakdown test will tell you whether the loss of compression is happening through the head or the block. That's rather the point of the test. Since adding oil to the cylinders increased compression, that suggests the loss of compression is through the rings. A leakdown test will confirm that.

Your repeated advocacy for a leak down test doesn't answer the question: How a leak down test will give any more clarity on why/how coolant seems to be involved in combustion in a couple of those cylinders. His engibe could run with those compression numbers. If it wasn't choking on coolant and maybe oil.

I'm not sure how much clearer I can be. If you're not following, I'm sorry. TL;DR, nothing about this scenario suggests a head gasket problem. Everything suggests a bottom end problem.

Wet test seals the rings.

Collected a bit of data, things are in motion now again to pull the head and do it again, and all things considered - it's about all I can do at this stage aside from a whole rebuild (would much prefer to do that ~2 years down the line). I went to see my local merkur master jimmy, he agrees and thinks the gasket isn't sealing. I did a few things wrong (didn't set the head down very even, used a metal gasket scraper to scrape off the blue gunk, took me a couple attempts to line it up, event still maybe block not clean enough)

Previously it did have white smoke on startup, which is gone since the head came back. The car will run, kinda has very low power, sometimes goes into a chugging train funk at ~500 rpms until it dies or pulls itself out into an either rumbly 1000 or decently smooth 1000 rpm. It'll die just trying to move it around the driveway (unless I keep it at 3000 rpms, even still before it used to have enough to torque for me to inch off the cluth and it would scoot a little)

COMPRESSION TEST RESULTS

First compression tests (dry, warmed up engine)
1: ~80 PSI
2: ~95 PSI
3: ~ 95 PSI
4: ~95 PSI

Second compression tests (dry, cold engine, max #'s)
1: ~90
2: ~110
3: ~105
4: ~110
(this was the only time I had someone help me by cranking it as i watched the gauge, each crank seemed to pump up the gauge about 15 psi rather consistently)

After this, I ran the engine until the smoke came and took notes,
Hard to start, ran steady for 5 minutes
Change of tone 5:30, sounds like a gurgling toilet from oil cap hole
8 less noise -- timing starts to go kinda crazy
9:40 starts to smell
11 at 2000 RPM on its own
11:30 revved down
12:30 smoke from tailpipe, revs back up, shut off car.

Days later, I rented the coolant pressure tester, pumped to 16 psi, only detectable leak was front radiator hose - tightened it
Changed a couple sketchy vacuum lines, (couldn't get pressure to build from pumping a vacuum tester tool). Turned on the engine with the vacuum tester connected into the lines, hovering crazily (not calibrated gauge?) around 12-16.

Car took quite a lot of cranks to start that time, first started at 500 rpms chugging but not dieing
Shut it off started at 1000 after a couple tries

Coolant pressure gauge didn't go up at all while the car ran, i pumped it to 16, didn't notice a change like coolant was leaking any more than before, (engine was basically "cold" though)

Oil puddled on camshaft pulley, as if it came through the middle seal.

MORE COMPRESSION TESTS (the next day)

Spark plugs pulled
Cyl 1: Smells like oil / carbon
Cyl 2: Mostly oil smell
Cyl 3: Oil, subtle coolant smell
Cyl 4: Smells like sooty coolant

Compression test (dry, cold, 10 cranks)
Cyl 1: ~85
Cyl 2: ~100
Cyl 3: ~90
Cyl 4: ~100

Compression test (wet, cold, 10 cranks)
Cyl 1: ~95
Cyl 2: ~110
Cyl 3: ~120
Cyl 4: ~120

Compression test (wet, cold, 12 cranks -- added more oil to cyl 1)
Cyl 1: ~110-115
Cyl 2: ~120
Cyl 3: ~125
Cyl 4: ~120

Compression test ( wet, cold, 20 cranks)
Cyl 1: ~120
Cyl 2: ~120
Cyl 3: ~125
Cyl 4: ~120

So I don't really know what kind of sign to make of the wet compression results, but the plan is to do the head again, this time with a Felpro 1035 gasket, cleaning the block even more, checking it with a metal ruler and a flash light, then copper gasket maker on both sides of the gasket and setting down the head as evenly as possible with a cherry picker.

by all accounts, I was worried about the increased compression during the wet test because I read that it points to rings, especially because the entire head has already been done. ya know, i was just kinda optimistic that the oil sealed the coolant head gasket issues for the test or something

I'm just not sure how I'm going to get the rings addressed, my dad mentioned something about pulling the pistons from the bottom and doing the rings, not sure if that is realistic whatsoever.

If I get another used block right now it seems as though I would be in the same boat anyhow as this engine has 94,000 on it right now, granted it probably sat for a while before me, but I did put the last 14,000 on it in the last 2 years.

As a side note, the rings issue could perhaps indicate why my oil looks so dark when I change it?

In any case, the engine used to run before all of this, and it seems like its choking and clearly burning coolant in one or more cylinders. I'm hoping with a re-done head gasket, it will become drive-able, and I'll have time to find a second block and get it rebuilt.

I'll do the leak down test cold and warm before Friday.

That's why I'd re do the head/gasket R&R. It ran before; it's got issues now. EOS.

I just can't see investing the time and money to deck a block, recheck a head, and buy a gasket kit when the end result is going to be a pristine head gasket on a motor with 90psi compression. That's throwing good money after bad. I would find out for certain whether the rings are toast or not and replace the engine if that's what it takes. Better to fix it right than fix it good enough. It's not tough to find a 2.3 motor, whether via junkyard, a car being parted, or throwing some money at a remanufacturer.

It ran before; it didn't smoke. It should run again; it shouldn't smoke.

Head gasket set ~ $50/gasket alone ~ half that.

One day to R&R (use engine crane).

Charbo: How did you torque the head? What head bolts did you use/reuse? (Maybe try retorquing head bolts to spec?)

Search here for how [un]common ring/bearing jobs are for the 2.3.

Low compression won't cause smoke. My Falcon ran on four cylinders with 0psi in 1 and 6 for a year without smoke. Doesn't mean it ran right (or even well), and doesn't mean I'd have put a single dollar into the engine if it needed it. I guess you do you, but I wouldn't run a motor with such low compression. Especially a boosted motor, when there is every possibility a ring will totally fail and you'll end up putting 15psi into the crankcase. I'd fix it properly.

Cylinder Leakage test hasn't quite happened yet, bought the Harbor Freight version, which is total crap, I thought i'd be able scrape together some form of accurate test with it's parts. None of the air hose spark plug adapters fit properly, the one that does fit has too many threads on it and I swear I hear air blowing out of the spark plug hole more than anything.

I used the original 12 point bolts, 3 were rusted, so I picked up 3 replacements from MPM. I didn't have a tap, one I bought but didn't fit because....? So I used one of the head bolts in an attempt to clean them out.

I know now I probably used the cheaper head gasket for normally aspirated engines, and by no accounts did I put it on smoothly, took a few tries. Also put in the sliders ass backwards into the head first instead of the block.

The growing pains are kinda TOUGH, lol. Not as forgiving as computers anyway, and more expensive.

I might as well check all my bases and if its truly bad do it right now that I have a cherry picker, but based on my first head gasket job, who knows how well pulling the engine will go. It would be a bit of waste to use the felpro 1035 I ordered and the one time use TTY bolts and not get a couple years out of it.

I'm going to try to put together my own tester, this article seems to cover it, http://www.supraforums.com/forum/showth ... own-tester as I am interested in measuring it. Should I tighten the bolts and check the head gasket to see if the leakdown % reduces? I do ultimately want to know how it all works so that I have confidence repairing and driving it. Eventually understanding the theoretical equation parts as well.

Couple engine pull questions, what happens with the tranny? Can it stay where it is during this? I probably need to remove the radiator to be safe? And once I've got it out and on an engine stand, how do I transport it to the rebuilder, as in, how do I get it on/off the truck? With a cherry picker? What are the chances I can re-use the pistons crank etc? I think my entire savings would be gone if I replaced them all.
