Scorpio Signal Generator for Speedometer Diagnosis

Speedo working fine or not working at all I believe is unrelated to the odo stepper motor.

Don't know why, but I had the impression that since both are signaled by the VSS, they'd be synched together. I wanted to know if my speedo was accurate, so before I cranked it up to 100mph, I timed the trip/odometer for 60 sec. and held the speedo @ 60mph (60mph = 1mile/min)... checked out fine.

Re the trunk latch, did you try locking/unlocking both passenger and driver door locks to see if there's any difference?

No, hadn't tried that yet. What are you suspecting that would indicate, since I'm getting voltage, etc. from the driver's lock, all the way up to the trunk solenoid.

I was unclear: the speedo can work fine while the stepper motor won't work, even if new gears were installed. I had that experience once.

Re the doors switch, nothing specific in mind, only that sometimes a rear window motor doesn't actuate with one of the switches and inexplicably later it works with the other.

Does anyone happen to know if there is another vendor that happens to have the odometer gears? I went to the link from FocusSVT's original post back in 2015, but it just pops up a "404 Page not found". I did try the website that the instructions are from (odometergears.com) and they show two gears there; a 20 Tooth Odometer Gear and a 16 Tooth Medium Odometer Pod (which it sounds like the 20T gear goes inside of the pod). If these are correct, then great, but I wanted to confirm just due to the change in information. I suspect that they are, and it's just that the original post was listing the kit which includes C11 & C12 and those numbers are probably item or part numbers rather than the number of teeth on the gears.
I'm sure the ones on the odometergears.com website are the correct ones and I'm probably asking a dumb question, but I just want to ensure that if we do end up determining that the gears need replacing that we are getting the right parts!

I used the 20T gear at odometergears.com to repair my Scorpio odometer.

It is a bit of a tricky job. Take your time and you'll get through it.

However, if your speedo, fuel computer, and cruise control also do not work then your speed sensor has failed.
If this is the case then it would be wise to address that before tackling the odo gear.

Over 6 years ago I installed new Odo gears and tested them using Jeff Herson's signal generator on this spare Scorpio speedo/odo head unit.

The writing is actual from the date shown.

Might part with it if a good offer was received.

Thankfully the speedo, fuel computer and cruise control all still work just fine. It's only the odometer that has stopped working after a fill up and pressing the trip meter reset button. I'm guessing that somehow by pressing that button the gears self-destructed or something.

Near as I can tell, they used the wrong kind of lubricant from the factory. It softened and weakened the plastic gear over time.
You'll see if and when you do the repair. The old gear will be "crumbly"
I don't think you will have a problem with the new gear failing.

When I did the replacement I don't recall that they offered the 16T gear at the time.

In any case, I try not to press the odo reset button while the car is in motion (on any vehicle that I own). I also press the reset gently. Not sure that makes a difference but it seems "safer" to me.

I don't really use the trip odometers anymore. On the Scorpio the fuel computer does a decent job. Android Auto and Google Maps tells me how many miles a long trip is going to take. The only time I would use the trip odo is if I was being reimbursed for mileage on a business trip.

The front/facade piece over the cluster removes via:

-- five screws (two on top, three on bottom)

Two push clips, one on each side

The pics are of a cluster facade removed from a JY donor. Note the missing side push and the remaining one epoxyed in place. If your cluster facade was previously removed either or both of those clips may be broken or missing. It's up to you to exercise caution/care in pulling on each facade side to release the clips.
