220CCA enough?
I'm gonna get a lightweight battery (dry cell, smaller than normal)
Curious if it's rating of 220CCA is enough for this monster starter or do i have to invest in the other one to make it work?

I don't think that will be enough. Esp if the car will see any kind of cooler/cold weather.
If I can find the link, there is a place that makes/sells the same thing as the Dyna-Batt battery (the little 13# thing). The Dyna-Batt goes for $160....it's less than 1/2 that at the other place. I had mine for 3 years, first in the TBird and then it spent the last year of it's life in the turbo Ranger...and saw some cold winter duty. Only didn't start when it was -15*F. It was still running in the truck when I sold it. I'll probably use something similar in the Tbird again come spring when it goes back on the road.

Re: 220CCA enough?
I installed a battery that is about 220CCA in my racer along with the lightweight (low draw) starter. Cranks just fine. I don't drive the car when it is cold and the battery isn't going to give me much time running the fan with the engine off. However, I saved 6 lbs with the starter and 12 lbs with the battery (not adding in the weight of the extra cable and mounting brackets, fabbed from 6061). Of course, I removed 26 lbs at a distance of like 3.5 feet from the CG (horizontal distance) and about 8 inches above the CG and replaced it with 14 lbs at a disance of about 18 inches from the CG (horizontally) and 12 inches below it. The benefits never stop adding up with a swap/mod like this.demonfire wrote:I'm gonna get a lightweight battery (dry cell, smaller than normal)

You're looking at an Odyssey PC680, right Ray?

Yeah, sorry I was wrong. My battery was the PC680 (well the Dyna-Batt version)It served me well, and as I said into the winter for at least one year. (the first two winters it was pulled from the car and stored inside).
Here's the link to the site as well.

Here's another

I wish I had found this before I bought the last one. I know where I'll be going to buy my next one.

The best battery that I have ever found is the stock Miata battery. You can get them from the dealer for $90.00 and it is TINY. It will crank a rotary with no problem and it also cranks my 2.3 with no problem using either style of starter. Of course I am in Dallas TX and it doesn't get really cold here. 20 degree weather is about as cold as I can remember starting one of my cars in.
For cold weather starting a proper tune up (ie freash plugs, wires, cap, and rotor) and good cables makes a bigger deffrence then having a huge batery or so said a study by allied signal some years back.

I have no clue about the Miata battery, but I'll guess that it is not a sealed battery. That makes it inappropriate for placement in the interior of a car. I suppose if it is under the 13.5 lbs that the Odyssey weighs in at, accomodations could be worked out for the battery. For the sake of information sharing, I picked up my PC680 (sealed, dry cell) for $55 from Ebay, buy it now.svo855 wrote:The best battery that I have ever found is the stock Miata battery. right now i have my oem focus battery in a sealed box behind the pass seat on the floor (low as i could get it) but ... well, i dont like the idea of having acid splashing around just in case, you know?

Odyssey: 220
Weight:

Cost (what I paid):

Odyssey: $55 plus shipping and remote battery conversion cost
Estimated yawing moment (of battery only) as installed in my racer:
Optima: (3.5 ft)(34 lbs) = 119 lb ft
Odyssey: (1.5 ft)(14 lbs) = 21 lb ft

Would this battery have enough juice to run the stock starter? Were you guys that were/are running it using the stock starter? For the obvious weight savings and more importantly the improved center of gravity dynamics this would seem to make sense. Especially since it's not much more than a normal battery. But if it ain't got the kahones to run the ginormous starter it may not be worth it.

Mine was running a "normal" starter the entire time I had it (in the Tbird and then in the Ranger). It had enough balls to start the truck down to -10*F.... I had mine for 3 years, no issues.xr4tiguy wrote:Would this battery have enough juice to run the stock starter? Were you guys that were/are running it using the stock starter? The Miata battery is sealed I think. It comes with vent hoses. I have had really bad luck trying to use anything fancy for a battery so I try to stay away from so called "racing batteries". The Miata batteries last a solid 5 years if you don't crash the car.

I'm glad my quest for less weight has helped so many... *e-tear*
