The Mazda6 has a sunroof; the MazdaSpeed6 doesn't offer it as an option (neither is leather seating available on that bad boy).

where do you get that it's not an option? boy, MOST mazdaspeed 6's come with leather. it's standard on the Grand Touring model. a power sliding moonroof is optional on the grand touring model and not available on the sport. come on Ed! http://www.mazdausa.com/MusaWeb/display ... leCode=MS6
I got it from Car and Driver, the most recent edition which I read last weekend, which specifically cited those two lacks as negative points among many positive ones.
Maybe the website is written by advertising types hyping beyond what they can deliver?

Well, rethinking it, the C&D article might have been on sedans with "go juice" at under $30K. I'm sure/SURE there was no mention of the Touring Model. The link you pointed to lists the Sport and the Touring editions. Or, maybe the Touring edition was recently introduced and not available when the article was planned.

the first time i read that article was over 3 months ago . it's been like that since the beginning!! the mazdaspeed6 was never supposed to be an evo or sti beater. it's a comfortable sports sedan with punch, that's it.

Usually the standalone brief reviews are first impressions based on limited driving time/miles with less evaluative comments, pro or con, than the comparos or the long-haul wrap up reports on vehicles they've had for a year or more.

I've got the Starion IC in my XR right now. I'm pretty sure the supercoupe one I have laying in my garage is better. Starion aren't too bad, but they're not exactly all they're cracked up to be.

Yep, totally agree. The SC IC is a good one, once you figure out how to deal with (or eliminate) the funky in/outlets.
I think it's the Honda crowd that has praised the Starion cooler to be "all that", probably because it fits easily and with it's 1.75" fittings, it's easy to plumb.

Yep, totally agree. The SC IC is a good one, once you figure out how to deal with (or eliminate) the funky in/outlets.

the sc ic doesn't seem like it has very good exterior flow through the core though...
the bars are so fat, and there's only one bar width between each bar (follow?)... it just doesn't seem like exterior flow through the core is very good. with the fat bars and not a ton of space between them, it seems like air basically must be forced through rather than easily flowing. look at the supra cooler and the isuzu npr... they have thinner bars, so the air can get around them easier on the outside. check out gus mahon's site and look at his exterior flow testing... corky bell also mentions it in his book.
i gotta look up that other book that was mentioned....

The "bars" are fat because it is a bar and plate IC core. I believe the Supra and NPR are tube and fin. It's the "tubes" that are narrow and the bars that are fat. The bar and plate IC cores are generally considered superior to the tube and fin IC cores, based on their relative performance. Additionally, the bar and plate are more expensive to manufacture.
You'll notice that the Forge "RS500" IC is bar and plate.
And the Pace "RS500" is tube and fin (it's the one in the background):

sorry, yes, i'm aware of the terminology and assembly, my brain just failed me at that moment!

So, are you talking about the fin density between the bars? Not the actual ratio of bar width to space-between-the-bar width?
The fin density is directly related to heat transfer out of the IC. A greater fin density increases the surface area and greater surface area increases heat transfer. Of course, there will be a point of diminishing returns, where you aren't getting enough airflow through the core to remove the heat that the fins are capable of transferring. I don't know where that point is. However, since increasing fin density also increases cost of the core, I would suppose that the manufacturer of the IC didn't exceed this number.
