I've run a MAF for several years now, but it absolutely requires a custom calibration or an entirely different PCM. At the moment, I'm running a D1L1 PCM from a '93 2.3 Mustang which is native MAF.

so really you can use any style of meter as long as you have the means to re-calibrate air/fuel to the ecu....correct?
i run an apexi air flow converter(AFC-2)....originally it enabled me to run a big VAM on a PF ecu...it took a bit of tuning but it ran hard....it also lets me use 46# injectors wich are out and back to 36's with the PE now....but i have my VAM on the pressure side.....after the T3/T4 swap and FMIC and walbro255...the decelleration was choppy and very jerky accell on 30% or so throttle, but ok under boost.....i had to richen up the whole curve about 12% with the 36lb inj but it runs way smoother and with no restriction on the inlet airflow, the internal WG is much more responsive and 12psi at the lowest hitting the next gear...no lag once the inertia is up.....big differance!
now i have a 4.6L ford throttle boby and i am making the adapter plate....it has an air bypass screw and tps,but not like our IAC's....i am going to try to run with out and can adapt the oem IAC onto the adapter

Not exactly. You need to re-program the PCM (ecu). A VAM and MAF work very differently, so external "re-calibration" devices are horribly flawed. (Search "Mess air conversion")

No hands-on experience with that, so I'm not your guy for that.

for simplicity aswell as i dont have a laptop or any computer of my own at home for that matter.....so 700 plus 1400 plus trailering 600km to a dyno to tune it....it seemed reasonable at the time...the air flow converter i mean....full standalone is out of my league i think.....i have understanding of the pe ecu and work from there...as far as programming my own ecm....im sure i would blow it up:)

Don't write if off yet, check out: http://www.bamafuel.com
He sells a plug-n-play megasquirt configured as a LA3 with a 4-bar MAP.

I kinda wish I had gone that route, but I ended up with a PE/big VAM I have yet to install...

no matter which route you go, you will need a computer to program it with. a used laptop can be had for pretty cheap nowadays.
I would advocate against the maf "band-aid" if you want good results...

While technically true, it's also a little misleading. As you correctly state, it's still Megasquirt. It's just a pre-built Megasquirt with a tune pre-loaded. It would be overly optimistic to think you could use it as delivered without further tuning. In fact, from what I've read, the supplied tune has not worked out for several folks who have bought it, but that shouldn't be terribly surprising.

I don't want to come down as negative on the product, cause it does fit a need for someone who doesn't want to pick up a soldering iron. Just offering a reality check, that's all.

so Brad
there is eec tuner,megasquirt,bamafuel...etc
i just got a nice laptop and i am going to go "programmable" for sure.....but where to shop?
i also will need to buy a wideband o2,but what kind are we using?....i want to make sure i will be able to use the sensor and tuning program together...
and what you mean is that bamafuel is just a prefabed megasquirt kit in an la3 ecu....like running off its j prom on the back?
also will i need to modify to edis or trigger wheel( on crank) ignition to run megasquirt?
much direction needed on this matter:)
thanks
