i just happen to be at PM motorsports today. phil has a volvo 16v head that he's working on for his race car. he just did a mock header to fit an incredibly huge turbo. the numbers were 1.02 a/r i think on the turbo. i'm guessing he will use his own plenum intake as well. he did a volvo head for another customer a few years ago also.
i had asked him about the volvo head a while ago and he said he'll do it if a custom request it but he'd rather go with the stock set up since it can get high hp# from it. i guess 623.5 hp isn't enough for him to continue using the stock head configuration.
so my next question is, what are the benefits of going with the volvo head over the stock head besides the extra valves?

I think that's pretty cool. Very cool, actually. I would like to know the flow numbers vs. the $$$. The Esslinger aluminum D port head flows more than the DOHC conversion assuming the volvo head is stock.

More info here:

http://www.merkurtech.com/merkurtech/te ... tem045.php

Then add an stand alone system and ignition box and custome header and intakes.

By the time you are done with just the head and added goodies according to the TF link you are well into $6k-$7K. For that price you can go 5.0ltr with a stroked motor and loads of goodies (cause 5.0ltr mods are waaay cheaper) and wipe a 2.3 all day!

* Note * I am not knocking the 2.3... its cool and I am striving, myself, to build my set up off the ol' lima block. Just thought I'd mention that!

Not really true at all. Where would you source the non-existant cams, lifters, valves, springs, etc from? Furthermore, the prototype head had problems - it was not ready for production. There are better ways to approach this, and Bob is well aware of them. That said, it remains to be seen if it can be done unless profitability is not an issue. Oh, right, I forgot... Jay Leno is going to fund it!

I agree with this, thinking over 5,000 might as well as drop in the V8 and get a lot more torque. High HP is nice but doesn't get you moving.

I'm also building up the 2.3 and if the price was around that of a esslinger head I would get it for my one xr. Now if my 87 parts car has a good enough undercarriage (salt belt) the 89 is gone underneath, I'm thinking about putting the V8 in it, witha solid 9" rear end tubbed and all the good stuff for drag racing.

I like the V8 idea,
but nothing puts a smile on my face more than beating a V8

This will never ever happen. Most owners complain about spending a few hundred dollars on their cars let along a few thousand for a head.

Next question would be how much is the intake manifold the new throttle body all the custom intercooler piping the exhaust manifold. etc etc etc

This will never happen.

Simon's not pissing on your bowl, it's the sad truth.
How many "You paid HOW MUCH for that car??" comments are made?
followed by the....My XR sucks! it keeps breaking down, but I only paid
200 dollars for it. LOL.

I would/will happily pay $1,500 -$2,000 for a very good condition XR. :D
