Street Racing

Anyone catch that show on A&E called Street Racing: The Need For Speed?

In my opinion street racing is not a crime if it is done properly and in a proper place.

What does everybody else think?

There's a time and a place; unfortunately, not a whole lot of people know how to determine when and where that is. I'm not ashamed to say that I engage in street racing from time to time, as long as safe conditions exist.

I agree with Colin. I am as guilty as he is (maybe even more-so

), but for police to come down to a straight dead end country road (like the only place that I have ever driven 140mph+) to impound/arrest/fine is just assanine.

Take it to the track.... MUCH cheaper in the long run. Also sets a good example. God help the ricers caught street racing in my neck of the woods.

Sorry folk, I'll have to take the old foagie stance on this, regardless of whether street racing is illegal, it shouldn't be done, take it to the track. Its dangerous, and even on country roads it puts bystanders in danger.

Actually, I cannot think of a good reason to go street racing. If you have the money to put into your car to make it fast enough to race, then you have the money to go to the track.

OK, are we talking about impromptu little Green Light Grans Prix, or an agreed-upon time and place? I wonder sometimes how street racing is defined legally, how it should be defined, etc. For example, if you both head up the freeway on-ramp at roughly the same time, and you try to be the first one to the merge point where two lanes become one, are you racing? I say no, unless you had some kind of communication before it began. When I make that turn to head up the hill and gas it to pass someone while the same merge situation exists ahead-- not to 'beat' the person, but to prevent having to wait for them to trundle up the hill (in typical lifeless and gonadless fashion) and therefore lugging my engine-- and trying my patience? I still say no. Now, if I head up the road and keep racing someone for an extended period of time, trying to pass them on a curvy road, with disregard for others' safety and/or rights-of-way. then I say it is.

What do you think? What's racing and what isn't?

If you applied enough rigor and no common sense to the definition, anytime you ever passed someone, or tried to, you'd be guilty of street racing.

Well there tough guy, I'd rather be torn down because I miss-spelled a word in my haste to say that a street racer is still a stupid A-Hole with no brain who has no regard for other people's safety.
When you think you have enough experience to stand up and tell someone who has spent the last 20+ year in the Fire Service who has to go out every 2nd night in the summer to cut some poor slob out of his 5.0 Mustang or HonDUH because they all thought they were big-time racers after a night of Playstation etc. then maybe, just maybe I'll show ya some respect.........

Man that's so old. It was set in Toronto way back in 1999, A&E must of taken it from their archives. I've met some of those guys, there dicks who own a $#!%^& performance shop that always moves from one place to another. They make their money by blowing up teenagers cars, who spend thousands of dollars on RX7s, DSMs and the like. Ian is right they're losers, big time!!!

I street race sometimes. Most of the time it just starts with me sitting at a light minding my own buisness and having someone pull up and rev on me. You are a f***** idiot if you race during the day or evening, I only run late at night. I have just started to meet up with the weekend street racers around here. We meet at sonic and roll out to the "strip". The strip is a wide open, dead end road way out in the middle of knowhere where there is no traffic at all. It is not totally safe but its way better than running on the streets.

i'll run somebody at a light, or cruise a bit and run here and there, but for the most part, i make my car fast cuz i like it, not to go race people. i have done your little "street racing" bit, and it's pretty stupid.
