Not sure how much you'd gain though; as you say the 5R55 seems to have slotted in an effectively new 2nd gear ratio, 1st and "HIGH" remaining the same.
It could, but you have to change the front pump, and :dunno Baumann has been saying that for years. I first talked with them about such a TCS way back in 00. They had just gotten going with their TCS for the 4R70W(the electronic AOD). I would stick with tossing the 5R guts into a manual A4 case. Unless you'd put it into an XR with a 4.0L, and then do it all as a swap(motor, trans, EEC, and trans control). I have to find the specs on the different 5Rs 5R55E: I think is like the 4R, and A4 in case design, the N/S/W I think have AOD style integrated BH/case. The N/S/W internals MAY fit into an A4/4R, but I don't know. The W is supposed to have different ratios, maybe a taller OD.

The OD will last longer if you don't engage it 2x. Read thru the thread I pointed to and you'll understand why.

It doesn't seem like the ideal way to get 5 "speeds", especially in a heavy vehicle (SUV) that will spend most of its life in the
(sub)urban jungle.
I think the ideal would be a 5sp auto-stick with TCC.

Has anyone looked into the Mustang SOHC 4.0 into an XR?
Is the SOHC 4.0 externally different from the older pushrod engines(different mounts and such?)

If the SOHC 4.0 wouldn't work, would, say, a 2.9 from a Scorpio bolt into an XR with relative ease?

That site you linked to is for members only. :?

I just thought it was intriguing beuase the mustangs use a 4.0 with respectable power (210+ hp) and a T5 tranny... In a couple years I'm sure they'll be in JY's everywhere (if they aren't already).

Sorry for this noobish post... I wish I had a random source for blueprints of random engines and suspension parts, along with blueprints of our cars... although I have some of that in my service manual.

I'd love to put a nice efficient V6 in my XR someday...

EDIT: I think one of these days I Just need to suck it up and go to a junkyard with a tape measurer, digital camera, and a clipboard and measure potential swaps...

As much as we have a nice support base for our cars I'm sure there are tons of more EASY parts swaps into our cars that we just don't realize yet, or aren't well publicized.

EDIT:
Here are some sites I found, one compares the PUSHROD 4.0 to the cossie 2.9, and one compares different pushrod 4.0s...

http://agnes.goams.com/ford/
From here the site says the 4.0 block is about a cm wider than the 2.9 and will need custom mounts

2.9L any motor will fit, as that is what it came with in europe. I don't know about the 4.0L SOHCs whether from the trucks or the Mustang.

The 4.0 in the Mustang IS the same basic Cologne 4.0 this thread is about. :beats head

That said, I imagine that it's drive-by-wire, so from a practical standpoint, you'd probably want to cross-breed some stuff from an earlier engine. I also recall seeing the 4.0 Mustang T5, and the tail is a different configuration than we're used to.

So a 2.9 cologne like from a scorpio will bolt right in (motor mount wise) into an xr?

And that goes the same for EITHER of the 4.0's? (ohv and ohc)?

Indeed, yes. The Scorpio is basically a stretched XR. Most everything on the bottom side is the same or very similar.

Pretty sure the block is essentially the same across all of the 6-cyl Cologne engines, but I don't have first-hand knowledge of that. I would suspect that the OHC engine is taller, but again, just speculation on my part. But again, since it's a more modern engine, you're faced with a plastic intake with a built-in electronic TB - the whole bit would need to be trashed and something original fabricated (unless there's something already out there in the after-market).

I was thinking more along the lines of, swap in the whole long block as is and wire in the ecu /harness from a donor car

I'm going to look into what it takes to install...

As far as I know, the bell housing is the same except for 1 bolt hole, you
can massage the hole to fit the 4.0L, or do what most of the Ranger guys
do, ignore it...

Haha, well... we'll find out I guess. I'm kind of sick of there not being a nice practical engine swap out there. A lot of people around here are quick to assume that things won't work or aren't worth the effort without doing the research...

in a worst case scenario, at least I'll be able to document what it would take, and exactly HOW and WHY it is impractical...

The idea of an engine swap is starting to get more entertaining for me (for the long term future). I know if I wanted to proceed modifying my 2.3 I'd be opening up a can of worms needing tuning, headwork, etc...

One thing that bugs me about this forum is there never seems to be any group collaboration on anything. If someone brings up a NEW idea that has some merit people are quick to shoot it down or not even look into it, but are hardly ever willing to actually contribute anything besides what they know off the top of there head, or what's worked before....

People often assume that if something hasn't been done before, there's a good reason for it. I'm sure with our cars a lot of the time that's true, but not always

I'm not shooting it down at all. I'm merely suggesting that the idea of doing it with stock EEC-V electronics, and everything that entails, is probably NOT the best path to persue. I'll be the first to congratulate you if you prove me wrong ...or right.

BTW, lots of people told me that combining a Brat and XR4 was stupid, a waste of time, etc, etc. I thank them for the motiviation.

The 4.0 sohc engine in our family Explorer hauls some very respectable ass. No doubt, if installed in an XR, which weighs, what?-- perhaps a ton less-- it would really scoot.

But for simplicity, practicality, and a plethora of available parts and assistance, how can you beat the "5.0?"

HP increased from 160 to 207 just by the "magic" of upgrading the engine to OHC heads from the ancient OHV setup. Given that the "cammer" version of the 4.0 was generally introduced in the Explorer in 2001, four years ahead of the Mustang, I'd suggest that an Explorer would be a better donor than the Mustang, factoring in not only the economics, but the fact that it wasn't drive-by-wire (not in 2001, any way). Not sure if that changed in 2002, the year when apparently the intake went to plastic. If that's the case, 2001 looks like a good choice for a donor.
