That is what I referred to in my comment.brokencase wrote: ↑Thu Jun 13, 2024 10:19 amThe EVTM describes how the vent doors operate, and there are cases where it sets the panel side vents to 50%
I've observed vent doors positioning at ~90*, although not at every vent (who cares; I'm not Dean anal...).
An increase or decrease in (side) vent door position angle effects passenger sense of temperature, ergo comfort, ceteris paribus.

Re: A/C charging issue resolved.
I don't think the side vent 50% matters that much. But certainly doable.
But I'll tell you what. Swapping in those new stepper motors is the way to go, instead of messing around with the old vent motors & gears.
I'd rather 3d print an adapter/mount for the new stepper motors than 3d print new gears for the old motors... and write a little bit of code to make sure they work right to my satisfaction. It's really not that hard....literally an open and shut case!
I found another vendor on ebay that had those 5 motors and drivers for $15. Very little risk. Pulled the trigger.
I was looking around for my old EATC unit so I could see how easy to tack on the three wires to the status LEDS.
Can't remember where I put it!

Re: A/C charging issue resolved.
I just took the Scorpio out for a spin with the vent doors removed and my new vent deflectors installed.
I have the two center vents 20 degrees pointed to the driver, the outer vents are 20 degrees pointed inward.
EATC set to panel, recirculate, hi.
Ambient was 86F. Car sitting out in the sun all day. Very hot inside to begin with.
Best A/C performance I've ever experienced in a Scorpio. Still sub-standard compared to newer vehicles, but now quite acceptable.
I'm sure most of the enhancement is due to the elimination of the old vent doors, but I won't discount my new vent deflectors.
I believe the vents are quieter, less of that higher frequency hissing/rushing sound. Radio seem more listenable.

That setting--EATC set to panel, recirculate, hi; no vent doors--is the one I decided to run exclusively with this year once ambient temps exceed ~75*.
Your always running condenser fan is a plus in slooow traffic; my corner hood seal sections removed (stored in trunk for reinstallation in cold weather) works noticeably very well when underway at say ~20 mph and above. Fyi, I installed new valve cover gaskets and with RECIRC Off I don't experience engine compartment odors.
otherwise?
I assume you cut out the OE deflector modules (I don't see that they are separable from the center panel).
Your pic of them earlier doesn't show that they are 4 way adjustable (?) but you say above they are at least 2 way adjustable... I found setting the vent deflectors not only angled as you did but also angled upward about the same degree aims cool air towards my torso and up quite well.
Are the new vent deflectors press-fit?
YMMV

Re: A/C charging issue resolved.
Yes, the deflectors "snap in". The originals are hard to snap in and snap out.
However the 3d printed ones after coming off the 3d printer - they require a bit of grinding with the Dremel to make them "snap in/out" easily.
This is what is desired, to be able to be able to flip them mirror image to change the flow direction, in addition to easily install the blanking covers for defrost. However, I am quite satisfied with the 20 degree positioning I have arrived at. If a passage wants more they merely flip the right center vent.
When I purchased this Scorpio there was a good deal for the silicone valve cover gaskets at RockAuto. Mandatory in in my opinion - I have no valve cover leaks.
Ed, my condenser fan running whenever the compressor is running is independent of vehicle motion. It is advantageous in all circumstances, slow OR moving in traffic. I believe mandatory for R134a but also advantageous for R12.
The stock electric fan is BS. it was designed to only turn on in "emergency situations", which it almost never does so. When it does turn on, it draws over 20-25amps which the stock alternator cannot handle. Because it infrequently cycles, many of them just die - frozen up.
Best to install an aftermarket 14 inch fan the draws acceptable current (I think mine is 8-10 amps) and to have it run more frequently. Directly cooling the condenser.
As I said I am reluctant to cut the hood seal. I see no valid reason to do so. You have not scientifically proven the advantage of this.

I had three spare hood seals: experimenting on them was a no-brainer.brokencase wrote: ↑Thu Jun 13, 2024 8:01 pmAs I said I am reluctant to cut the hood seal. I see no valid reason to do so. You have not scientifically proven the advantage of this.
Oh get off it (your high horse). The results I described are as valid anecdotally as are your results with the new vent deflectors. And I can cite the Venturi Effect as siphoning engine compartment air with the seal corners removed, reducing dead air at the cowl area, and facilitating air flow through the condenser and radiator. It works.

Whatever works for you.
Nothing cools the condenser better than an electric fan bolted right to it and running whenever the compressor is running. I don't need to do anything beyond this.

Re: A/C charging issue resolved.
See Ed, You actually think that as the car is in motion the air EXITS those openings you have created.
Citing a "Venturi Effect" I believe are your words.
This video will explain to you that quite the opposite happens.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irVDERE7CtU
Welcome to the high pressure region between the cowl and the windshield that develops when the car is in motion.
Now, I'm not saying this proves/disproves your anecdotal observation of improved cooling with your cutouts.
But I will demand sensible explanations as I sit on my not so high horse.
Yes, I am patient and will wait for you to tape little streamers around your openings to prove this to yourself. I will even wait for you to formulate a new theory as to why your cutouts work.
So I'll be over by the chuckwaggon Ed, Sitting on my not so high horse, eating pork and beans, waiting for you to collect your thoughts.

Note the Lever for raising/lowering the vent deflectors.

Sadly that is a right hand drive vehicle. Not a Merkur.
I think that is an open and close vent control for the Euro Scorpios that did not have an EATC.

It's easier to adjust the deflectors up/down at desired angle with a finger.

The open circle and the closed circle would indicate to me that the control is for opening and closing the vent.

Re: A/C charging issue resolved.
It's a slide lever. So just as on ours the vent deflector angle can modulate air flow from full open to midpoint to full closed, but it's easier done, and without looking at the deflectors, via the slide lever.

Re: A/C charging issue resolved.
So I believe what you are saying is that is a Euro Scorpio that did not have EATC and that lever opens and closes the vent doors that the motors do on our cars.
Do they have similar levers the outermost vent doors or is it just the center vents only?
