Re: 88 Scorpio
.
I believe when new the filter material was either a color similar to as shown cleaned or possibly another color than changes into that when submerged in gasoline over time. XR and Scorpio filter colors match, so same material.
Discoloration isn't crud. There are loads of posted pics of true crud on removed XR filters.
I thoughly/Thoroughly cleaned that filter. There were some black deposits inside in a few areas that required extra effort to dislodge (the filter did its job).
The filter material is very strong/resistant to rips or tears. The rip in Noah's Dad's filter looks to result from bench handling.

Re: 88 Scorpio
The new universal pump kits come with filter screens. In some cases multiple screens of different geometry.
I would not re-use the old screens.
There is not much particulate crud, but if there is a break in the screen (as shown in more than one place in the previous photos) then who knows what was sucked up into the pump?
Yes, the fuel filter later on will protect fuel to the engine, but the screen is there to prevent those particulates from getting into the pump.
A particle not much larger than a grain of sand can jam the innards of the pump.

Noah: Was the pump filter ripped as in your photo while in the tank? Or possibly on pulling the unit from the tank? Or while removing the filter from the pump while on your work bench?

Two things to replace; each likely original equipped items on ymthis Scorpio:
-- transmission mount
-- giubo/flex joint
Each typically needs replacement after ~75K miles.
YMMV

Re: 88 Scorpio
My first Scorpio had a bad trans mount @ 80K miles. It seemed like there was a previous oil leak that softened the mount and it began to sag.Ed Lijewski wrote: ↑Fri Jan 17, 2025 6:33 pm Two things to replace; each likely original equipped items on ymthis Scorpio:

I think this then led to the guibo failing due to the trans moving around.
My current Scorpio is now around 90k and the trans mount and guibo are fine (at least the last time I looked). The service history indicates the transmission had a front pump seal replacement at 40k. But the receipts do not indicate that the guibo or mount were changed.
In any case I bought a spare trans mount in the event I may need it. I was worried that they would become no longer available.
I think at this point (age, not mileage) it would be wise to replace the engine motor mounts. I'm going to snatch up a set of the Thunderbird hydraulic mounts on clearance right now at RockAuto for about $5 each.

Re: 88 Scorpio
If I punch "guibo" into google, and it responds with the proper description (and does not correct my spelling BTW), then it it good enough for me...and probably good enough for everyone else...except Ed.
FWIW - A text search for "guibo" through all the old IMON email listings brings up around 2500 instances.
A text search for "giubo" yields only 18 hits.
I guess we will have to just toss it up to a linguistic diachronic process that Ed will have to live with! For in this process majority rules.
I, for one, am grateful that google's AI does not interfere in this process and acknowledges both forms.

So much for having confidence in the accuracy of information in Listserves.FWIW - A text search for "guibo" through all the old IMON email listings brings up around 2500 instances.

You can call it a guibo, but to be correct it is a giubo.

"You can call it a guibo, but to be correct it is a giubo."
No, both forms are correct (as my google investigation demonstrates) and in our neck of the woods "guibo" is the more accepted and dominant version (as my IMON archive search demonstrates). The fact that Google AI search resolved "guibo" correctly is a result of not only discussions in the IMON mail list and Merkur forums, but the many other automotive forums for vehicles that feature this component that the Google AI engine scrapes through.
Now - Why is that?
Because "giubo" is antithetical to common American English. The construct "giu" practically never occurs in common English.
Accordingly "guibo" sounds "better".
A long time ago they used to say "The whole kit and boodle". This later evolved into the now familiar "The whole kit and caboodle".
Simply because "The whole kit and caboodle" sounds better.
Now, at the time of this metamorphosis there were individuals like yourself Ed, proclaiming "Wrong! it is 'The whole kit and boodle'"!
But nobody listened to them. In the end they lost.
Just like you will now lose with "giubo".
