Hi all,
I bought a used Scorpio transmission five or six years back and want to rebuild it and put it in the XR. Anyone have a bell housing that will work for this? The V6 unit has the starter on the wrong side as most of you probably know.
Cheers

crack repairable.
Trying to think back. What vehicles came with a 2.3 and an A4LD? Was it just the SHO Fox body Mustang? The Thunderbird Turbo Coupe?
There was also the Mercury version of the 2.3 Thunderbird turbo coupe. I know because I hacked it back in the day.
It was one of the vehicles that the "EECIV Chief" leased one year. It must have been rare, because I can't find a picture of it on the web.
It looked just like the Thunderbird turbo coupe, but it it did not have the fast back. The rear window was vertically chopped.
Why can't I find a picture of that car on the web?
OK found it. Here it is: .
.
I'll tell you what. I have not seen one of the above vehicles in a very long time. Probably almost as rare as a Scorpio.
But I actually like the styling.
Anyway, You could take a BIC pen housing, drill a tiny hole in it and place it inline to the waste gate. This would bleed off pressure and force the turbo to go higher PSI. I think this was elucidated in an Hot Rod article of the period.
Fun stuff. I can remember me an my high school buddy Ted filling the tank with Sunoco hi test and octane boost additive and trying out the bic pen mod. I think we had it up to 18 psi.
Almost as fun as the nitrous oxide experiment on the Ford Fairmount inline six the year previous!
Ted and I on an isolated side street in the Fairmount. All I had was two wires to touch together to engage the nitrous solenoids.
So I would floor it while Ted was touching the wires together. He would touch them together and one rear wheel would light up and smoke, then he would release and look over at me with a question marked face. Then he would touch wires together again and the rear wheel would light up again. It was silly stupid. That poor old Fairmount. It experienced many other abuses besides this.
To quote my other Irish high school buddy Dan Connelly - "Aye she's a fair mount!"
Anyhow I digress, you brought about so many fond memories. - why would you want to hook a 2.3L to the A4LD?
Your going to have to play around with the stall speed of the torque converter.
If you want to go automatic then I would suggest swapping over to the 2.9L engine. More low end torque and better suited to the automatic.

In any case I think DImitri did this way back when - when he put a 2.3L turbo into a Scorpio and brought it to the Merkur gathering in Carlisle.

It would be worth your effort to contact Merkur Depot about this.
I believe he already has a trans ready to go for this that he would probably sell for a good price.
I had all of the stuff to do this, however it was decided to pass on it.
I may have some, I'll dig around and see what I can come up with.

Looks like there were two different 2.3 A4LH bell housings. See attached.
I guess the difference is the 6 or 8mm pump bolt holes

As I recall, you can use an XR C3 bell housing on the A4LD. You have to drill an additional hole, I don't remember the details anymore. Search the forum the info should be here somewhere.
