Volvo 850/C70 Radiator Install

Post by DPDISXR4Ti »

The Volvo 850 radiator has been installed in a XR4, but I don't believe anyone has ever put one in a Scorpio. The original factory radiator mounting into a Scorpio is similar to an XR - from the bottom-up - but the mounting tabs off the end-tanks are much higher on the XR vs. the Scorpio rad. The Volvo rad is similar to the XR, but the mouting tabs are too high for a good fitment into the Scorpio. Not to be deterred, I'll cut the tabs off the Volvo (all-AL) radiator and build a bracket, much like many of us have done for the Saab 900 radiator install in the XR. It'll actually be a much easier bracket to build for the Scorpio.

Volvo used this radiator for a really long time across several models so availability is great. If you're searching by application try 1994 - 97 Volvo 850 or 1998 -2004 Volvo C70. I would focus on the after-market all-Aluminum versions. There are some slight variations. Most have the fittings for the built-in transmission cooler. It's no problem just ignoring those regardless of your transmission type. Some have a vent fitting at the top. It looks like that'll nicely pop up where there's already an opening. It's not really needed on the Scorpio as there's already a vent line from the intake manifold. I'll just Tee into that and have two vent locations.

Details and pics as I go.
